An-24/An-26

Hi Guys! Why is it so quiet in here? I just discovered how good the Russian aircraft can be. Just by chance I went to my local airport (EGPO) and saw the daily mail plane unloading. Usually it's some clapped out Shorts 360 but recently they've been using an An-26B. What a machine! I came home and searched for something similar in the library and found the version by Dimitri Samborski and also the An-24RV. What a sim machine! It took some getting used to the panel and Cyrillic lettering and finding upgrades on avsim.ru is a hoot! I'm getting quite good at using online Russian-English translators.Anyway, to the point. I can handle the cockpit layout, the KPH airspeed indicator, the autopilot and basic VOR/ADF navigation but I just can't handle metres for altitude and VSI. ATC tell me to descend to 3700 feet and I'm lost. Make an plated approach and I have to pause the sim and do the arithmetic first. Do Russian aircraft operating in the West especially the UK have instrumentation on board in feet and fpm as well as their traditional counterparts? They must have TCAS so does that work in fpm?AndyB

Hi Andy,I think the main reason of it being so quiet here is the fact that Project Tupolev has an own English forum now that you can find here: www.protu-154.com . The big part of the Russian aviation fans can be found there now, but I agree it's a pity that this forum is so quiet now. Regarding the AN-24RV, I think the easiest way to avoid the confusion between feet and metres is to switch FS9 to metric values, you can do that in the options. If you need a good tutorial for the navigation equipment of the AN-24 go here: http://www.hrasko.com/gabor/srsz/AN24_RNAV_13102004.zipIt's a great document written by Gabor Hrasko, and it will halp you in other Russian aircraft as well.Regards,Daniel

Hi Daniel,Thanks for your reply. I don't fancy having FS9 in metric so I've installed a couple of Western gauges which help a lot. I had already downloaded Gabor's tutorial but it's a bit heavy unless I decide that I want to use all of the equipment on a Russian flight or two! Thanks for the link to Project Tupolev, it's a great site.RegardsAndy
