February 13, 200323 yr HiI'm currently just going over the last of my flight revision before i take my a/c technical exam, and after reading about CG, stability etc through my book, i'm wondering how would one know whether they have exceeded the allowable CG limits for forward and aft BEFORE they takeoff? As a guess i would assume there would be some sort of guide lines you have to follow within the flight manual.CheersWill

February 13, 200323 yr The AFM has weight and balance charts included. The calculations not only take into account the weight of the object (pilot, pax, baggage), but its location (fore and aft) in the airplane. You not only have to compute the takeoff W&B but the landing as well. As you burn fuel, you change the CG of the airplane. Some airplanes - such as the V35 Bonanza - can be within limits on takeoff, but wind up out of limits (aft) within an hour or two into the flight. Also note that the W&B charts are specific to the airplane as each plane may have slightly different equipment lists and therefore different CG's.
