Just to be clear on the terminology, an aircraft smoke system is different to the contrail effect, although I think they use the same texture bitmap. The smoke system is actually activated by a key press (check your key assignments to see what key you have allocated to the function) and mimicks the effect of smoke as you would see in an aerobatic display. You can activate the smoke at any altitude simply by pressing the allocated key. The contrails, otoh, are an effect in the sim that only appear (automatically without any action on the part of the user) at altitudes of approximately 30,000 ft or more.
