March 22, 200719 yr Hello all, Just started simming and I am really excited about this. I have installed the fs9update.exe patch. When I am flying and look at the ground scenery, I seem to get a lot of the shimmering moire effects that is quite unnerving. I have all my Display detail sliders set all the way to the right for just about everything. I run fs9 on a high end laptop. I tried all kinds of resolutions and still get the same effect. No problems in frame rates. I have it locked at 20fps and its pretty smooth even over manhattan or over himalayan mountains. Will reducing any of the sliders help? March 22, 200719 yr My guess you have set the MIPS setting (under the hardware tabof display setting - on the right) right up to max. You should set this to about 4or 5 depending on the quality of your monitor. If this is the case... MIPS controls the sharpness of the distant image. There isa problem as detail becomes smaller in the distance that the scenerydetail is smaller than the pixel size of the screen. As you movieyour point of view these different scenery detail move in andout of view within each pixel creating a shimmering effect.RegardsTom
March 22, 200719 yr It's probably the mip level quality setting. Higher values will produce sharper textures, especially in the distance but will also contribute to texture shimmering. To counter the shimmering effect, the anisotropic filtering level must be increased. Setting flitering to trilinear may also produce slightly better result.Of course, higher mip map quality and higher AF will result in reduced framerate. Depending on the speed of the video card, this can be a significant hit or no noticeable impact at all.
March 22, 200719 yr I agree Mip Maps @ 4 seems to work best for most people and that's where my shimmering was coming from. I still get a little around airports though and can't figure that one out.
