Disappearing runway textures

Recommended Posts

Guest richpress

I fly mainly in New Zealand and recently I have noticed that some (not all) runway textures while in full view on approach disappear either wholly or partialy on landing. I have 2 copies of FS9 installed. One for working and one for testing. The working copy has Red Baron New Zealand 20mesh scenery installed but both now seem to have the same problem despite renewing the config file. A classic case is NZWU "Wanganui". On approach it is in full view. On landing it progressively disappears until the aircraft comes to a halt on grass. NZNS (Nelson)shows a fragmented runway from the lookdown view.Richard.

Okay; which AFCAD's are you using? Most likely the problem is the area needs a localised "flatten" (NZ aerodromes are, for the most part, built on sloping terrain, but this is a real no-no in Flight Sim).If you have the Lee Swordy's AFCAD programme, you can lay an unlinked taxiway beneath the rwy and this flattens the immediate area. David "Opa" Marshall's "AFCAD Tips and Tricks" tutorial in the AvSim Library mentions this and many more trick.

I am a bit supprised that I should need to do any flattening as my problem is a recent ocurrance.Prior to this everything worked perfectly. However I recently installed some real NZ scenery including Wellington (the updated version). I'll check out with Robin Corn whether he can throw any light on the subject.I"ll also check out David Marshalls "AFCAD tips and tricks."Many thanks Richard

Yes I have all Real sceneries installed including Wellington (the upgraded version). I had previously had problems with the original version of Wellington which were resolved with the upgrade. The timing of some of these installations are recent and could have something to do with the problem. My working copy of FS9 has Red Baron 20 mesh and NZ Topo installed. My test copy has only Real NZ Sceneries installed. Many thanks Robin,Richard.

This would be my fault, then, I think. The method I used to remove the default flatten from Wellington has resulted in what I can only assume are rounding errors at other airports within the same flatten file. (basically the centre 1/3 of the country.)Although the new flatten BGL continues to show exactly the same elevations as the default, it seems to round them to the nearest metre. This is enough of a difference to make the runways disappear. You can remove my flatten file, and restore the default, if you wish. The relevant files are located in:Flight Simulator 9SceneryOcensceneryFind the file called:FL994460.gvfand rename it:FL994460.bglFind the file called:gvf994460.bgland rename it:gvf994460.bakThis will change the appearance of Real NZ Wellington, but won't really affect the operation of the airport. There'll just be a bit of a cut in the hill behind the airport.Let me know how you get on.-Robin

That did the trick. Many thanks Robin. The attachment shows a cleft in the hill. I assume this is what you are referring to. Richard
