ASA: issues with real time weather?

Featured Replies

Hi folks, today I was flying with ASA (B431, global mode on) real time weather at FL350 and had a lot of issues with the temperature at this altitude. It changed several times (every 5 minutes or so) between the correct -50C and +15C, what my aircraft obviously didn't like at all. I didn't have this issue for months now, and I did not make any changes to my system in the last weeks. I know there have been discussions about this issue, and that the answer was that it is related to some bugs in FSX and SimConnect. But during the flight I changed to historical weather (also with dynamic updates) switching back to the weather one day before, and to my surprise the temperature was stable for the rest of the flight (with the expected minimal changes). This might lead to the conclusion that the problem is not related to the communication between ASA and FSX, but somehow has to do with downloading real time weather (since the downloaded historical weather incl. updates worked perfectly fine).Any ideas what is going on there?Kind regards, Hans

Hi,If you remember, what was your approximate location when this happened? Thanks,

Hi Jim,I have discovered the issue on two flights:1. at FL80 on the route SBCT - SBPA2. at FL350 on the route KSLC - KRDU in the area Nebraska / Iowa / Illinois (then I switched to historical weather)If I have some time I will try the routes again with the same weather I used yesterday.Kind regards, Hans

Ok, some more tests:just finished a flight from KDEN to KDTW at FL350 at the same time I had the troubles yesterday (ASA set to FSX time). In the area KMCK/KCSB/KEAR the temperature problems started again (about the same time/place as yesterday). Temperature switched every 2 minutes or so from the correct -50C/30.00QNH to +15C/29.91QNH. Wind and visibility seemed to be correct. Time was 2009-06-13 11:36:42Z (I can provide the current_wx_snapshot.txt file from that time if it helps). Now I changed ASA to real time (i.e. 2009-06-14 14:44Z), and as soon as the weather has been applied the temperature changes stopped. This was reproducable, i.e. setting ASA back to FSX time resulted in temperature problems again. Setting to real time, and everything was perfectly fine.So it seems that there was a problem with the weather data on 2009-06-13 in that area/at that time.Kind regards, Hans

Hi,Thanks for the details. It does look like it was a data issue from the source. I wish we could filter out bad data but we don't know it is bad until it is too late; already in FS.Thanks,

Hi Jim,ok, if it is bad source data that causes the issue, it is definitely not ASA's fault. But wouldn't it be possible (see it as a feature request for SP2 ...) to detect such obviously wrong data (+15C at FL350 - or can it really happen somewhere?) within ASA and ignore it resp. use interpolated data instead? I.e. do some sort of basic weather plausibility checks before sending the data to FS?Kind regards, Hans

Fsuipc has a smooth temperature changes option. Maybe that might help
