June 28, 200916 yr I am a little concerned about the number of files in the fmc airac data folder. While searching for ways of improvement of hard disk performance, I found that MFT size and fragmentaion also matters. Large number of files increases the file seek time. Also, windows allots a standard amount of space to mft during installation. If the space becomes full due to large no of files, a new MFT extension is created somewhere else on the HD thus creating a discontinuity which adds to performance loss. The airport procedures data contains almost 3000 files few Kbs each adding to around 20Mb. Each developer uses different format and thus 3000x no of files installed for the same data. add to that more than 40000 files of fsx. while the windows folder has little more than 15000 files.can this possibly effect HD and fsx performance? how many files can the MFT take in its default size? and why not merge all the airport txt files into a single one?
