ATI 9700pro or 9800

Featured Replies

Hi guy! I can read the back of the boxes all day and its like reading German to me. Best buy has both cards on sale. The 9700pro All-in-Wonder is $349 and the 9800 is $249. I was wondering for FS9 if the 9700pro will outperform the 9800?thanks,Tommy

The 9700 Pro AIW comes with a television and a bunch of other really cool stuff that you don't really need for Fsim. The 9700 Pro regular card is a lot less expensive than what you quoted. The 9800 regular or non-pro card is about the same as the 9700 Pro performance wise. The 9800 Pro is the top of the line card right now. Any of those will perform nicely in FSim.Clock speeds:9700 Pro 3259800 3259800 Pro 3789800XT 450 (aka 9900 will be available soon)ATI Loki will blow all of these away and will be here next spring.

Thanks for the input! Im sure the 9800XT wont be cheap. Is it worth waiting for though? Can we expect the 9800pro to come down in price when it comes out?thanks again,Tommy

The 9800 for $249 is a good deal nowadays. I've seen the 9800 Pro for $300 after rebate. The 9700 is still around $250. All good prices for what you get. I don't really see the 9800 Pro moving much as the 9800XT is not a huge leap forward. Just a faster card. It also depends on whether we see any kind of serious competition from their main competitor in the near future. I hope the next generation Nvidia is a great card. Otherwise we'll see high prices for a long time to come. ATI claims they have 97 percent of the over $300 video card market now. That's not a good thing for us buyers. If I was looking, I'd probably buy now.Anandtech (I think that's right) is supposedly releasing a review on DX9 Halo2 tomorrow showing the 9600 Pro => than the 5900 Ultra flagship with the DX9 Pixel Shader 2.0 tests.

Whether it's worth the wait depends on what card you have now. If you have a 9500, for example, I'd wait. If you have a GeForce2 or something like that-- buy now. If that 9800 is $249, it might be a non-pro. A 9700 pro w/out AIW may be the better buy.

You might want to discuss the driver issues with one of the people here who already has one before being swayed into buying one by folks who does not ... Scroll back a few pages and you'll see the posts.Buyer beware ... Seems no one (nVidia OR ATI) can release drivers that work properly with flight sims these days :-lol
