September 27, 200322 yr Hi guys!I was wondering...why we can't have a flight simulator that comes with everything "preset" as a "Nintendo" or "Sega" game boxes? With every new release of FS, we spent months just finding the way to improve performance, updating video cards, changing computers, asking, wondering, trying to figure out this or that!...Sometimes I feel that we are the real "engineers" of every new version of FS. We make them work, updating PC's, Specs, etc... Don't get me wrong..I am a big FS fan since FS 95 days..I do love fs98, 2002 and, "with some reserves" fs2004....but I would like to spent more time flying the sim and not testing the system. Maybe I am asking too much. The other day I didn't resist the tentation..I re-installed my old FS98 copy..what a great feeling!..frame rates from 70's to 100's!!!! Waooo..I just wanted to feel again that sensation of "fluidity"..Yes, I know..comparing fs98 visuals with today's technology is like going back in time 100 years!..but wouldn't be great to get that same feeling today?... with FS2004!!!...I know...maybe I am asking too much. In this unfair world..at least we have the right to dream! I dream with a Fligh Simulator "Box" that you can connect to your PC...That box will come with more than 15 aircraft, it will cover all the world, it will have great graphics and great performance..maybe it will have a port where you can place a disk with additional scenery and planes..and...and....and.....Just dreaming????All the bestYamin
September 27, 200322 yr Yeah, but could you add hundreds more planes to the box?The reason FS has to be tweaked so much, is that it is designed to support so many different computers. Most new PC games these days will say on them - 2Ghz PC, 512Mb RAM - and if you have less....But the FS community has so many people with older PCs who would explode if this were the case, that MS has to build FS so that it can be tweaked to work, even on old PCs. Thats why there are so many tweaks that can be made. Finally, unlike just about any other PC game, FS has to be compatable with files from the previous version - or people would complain. MS cannot replace .bgl etc. because this would make the production of freeware add-ons more complex (new compilers would have to be made etc.).http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/36121.jpgJust got to set up my new PC:Athlon 3000512Mb PC3200 DDR RAM (400MHz)256MB nVIDIA GeForce FX 5600seUntil then, FS9 sits on my shelf :-(
September 27, 200322 yr Hi Yamin,Notice how it's difficult to find two PCs with exactly the same specs? If all computers were identical, then flight simulator could definitely come with everything finely tuned and optimised, but in the real world, this is not the case. The simple fact that computer hardware varies significantly from user to user means that the software must have parameters that you can adjust, and configuration settings you can play with, otherwise there would be people who have flight simulator running smooth as silk while others would have no choice but to fly a "slide show".You must also realise that the code behind FS9 is incredibly efficient, and its amazing that with today's hardware such amazing visual detail is able to run at all!I don't need to dream, I'm living it with FS9!James
September 27, 200322 yr It would be virtually impossible due to the difference in computer system setups. There is no standard as everyone has a different computer set up. Hence the ability to tweak. Imagine what it would be like if it came "as is" out of the box and you had no ability to adjust for best personal performance.XBox or Nintendo units are built for one purpose only. Computers are made for multi tasking jobs other than gaming. Software needs to be flexible in order to universally work on an individuals system. But it's okay to dream I guess :-wave
September 27, 200322 yr See these threads...http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...d=147330#147411 http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...d=147330#147416Barry
September 27, 200322 yr You may spend all of that time doing all of those things but not everyone does. I installed Fs9, spent two or three days adjusting the sliders until I got everything set right for my computer and since then I have been flying. I turned the frame rate counter off when I was done adjusting and I won't turn it back on until I upgrade or change my system in some way. All of the tips and tweaks you read about in the forums are not necessary for good performance. Microsoft has supplied all of the sliders you need in the sim to get it running on your computer but if you want to tweak and adjust instead of enjoying the sim that's your decision. Runs great and looks great on my computer, what more can I say.Richard
