Video Question of the Year: Has anyone tried both Radeon and 5900 Ultra?

Featured Replies

All,I'm about to go to Circuit City and try out the Radeon 9800 Pro to compare with my current 5900 Ultra & 3.2 Ghz PC.The main image quality features I want fixed are the blurry textures.ATI versus NVidia is nice for our forums to argue about but is there anyone out here who has used both in FS2004?Tim

***********************************-Athlon 1800XP Processor-I forget the motherboard, but it's not a cheapo!-512MB DDR SDRAM PC2700 80% or more. Locked at 20FPS 90% of the time, and I drop down to 12-16 when my AI is at 100% and I'm flying into Barajas. :-)Investigate, research, tinker. If I had your setup, I guarantee you I would not be complaining about the blurries! Swapping one $400 card with another $400 dollar card is not what is going to fix it.That being said, I have been an ARDENT NVIDIA supporter/purchaser for longer than I care to remember, but I just ordered myself an ATI 9600 Pro ($135, shipping included) to replace the GeForce2. And YES, there is a reason I didn't buy yet another NVIDIA card... you do the math on that one.

I flew both this past weekend at a LAN meet. Flew them side by side. First system:AMD 2700XP @ 2800A7N8X Deluxe Rev 1.41 Gig Kingston ram5900 Ultra and 45.23 1280 x 960 x 32Second system:AMD 2400 @ 2700A7N8X Deluxe Rev 2.01 Gig Corsair ramATI 9700 Pro and Omega 2.4.78 1280 x 960 x 32We both flew the same flight... over the S.F. Bay area in the default 172. We tweaked the FS9 display settings as close as possible for testing. Framerates were nearly identical on both systems... neither of us could tell much of a difference. But it was clear that the ATI system offered better image qaulity. It was working at 6x AA / 16x AF, while the 5900 system was at 2x AA / 8x AF. The ATI system offered more vibrant colors and better AA. AF (shimmering of Alpha textures) was only slightly better on the ATI. We even swapped monitors (one a Sony 19", the other a Viewsonic 19"), but the ATI still offered better IQ. We then flew both systems at 1600 x 1200 x 32, and the ATI started showing a few more FPS (2-5 FPS). It still had the better IQ.Both systems were very close... no show stopping weaknesses. Both handled the sim well. While it was concluded that the 9700 Pro was the better card (by several simmers watching), it certainly wasn't worth spending the $200.00 - $300.00 to change out the 5900 Ultra.Clearly, this wasn't a scientific benchmark... just a few serious flightsimers who tweaked both systems as close as possible to see what we would see.Hope this helps. I agree with Eko about your blurries issue... this is not a problem with your hardware.
