October 8, 200322 yr Is there a way to increase the distance that the roadside telephone poles and lights show up? Autogen visibility distance is acceptible but the telephone poles don't show up until you are almost on top of them.
October 8, 200322 yr William, by chance I was looking into the visibility distance of these objects last night. You'll be amazed to hear that the visibility distance of telephone and light poles is approximately 14 miles, compared to about 2 miles for most autogen objects. The reason they quickly disappear is that they're very thin, so at a small distance the width is less than a pixel on the screen. Anti-aliasing may well increase the actual visibility distance. To illustrate, try this experiment. Look down a long road with poles on the side. Now increase the zoom by a large amount. You will see more and more distant poles popping into existence. If you are standing on the airport apron, then poles that are far beyond the horizon are being rendered by the scenery engine! This will certainly pull down frame rates. To have such a huge visibility distance for such thin objects is bizarre, to say the least. This is a major mistake by Microsoft that should be rectified. Almost certainly this is a contributing factor to the well known autogen problem. Best regards, Chris
