Moving folders from one PC to another?

Featured Replies

Need help from some of the guru's out here! I have a few "freeware" aircraft I have downloaded and loaded into FS2004. They are all in their own aircraft "folders", ie; 737-800 etc. I have a buddy of mine that has no clue on how to work with folders, editing aircraft config files etc, but would like to have some of these aircraft. Short of downloading, unzipping, configuring etc to his machine which I can do, but I want to try to save some time, can I just copy these specific aircraft folders from my PC to a CD or diskette and then drop them into his copy of FS2004 aircraft folder section? Will they function without any other configuration changes? If there are any other changes I need to make, what are they? and where would they be?Any help would be welcome. Thanks, Joe

You should read any 'readme' files or other documentation that came with the new planes you have. It will tell you any extra steps you need to take to make it work. You should be able to just transfer folders to your bud's aircraft folder and have it work. I'd read what the author of the software said first though.Miller

Joe, if you just copy the concerned aircraft folders, there is a high probability you will miss some of the gauges that are possibly specific to these a/cs, unless they all use default ones, which is unlikely.Your best bet, to me, would to copy the whole zip files they were extracted from onto the cd and reinstall them onto your friend's puter. That is, if you kept those zip files after you installed them on your system. The gauge files aren't kept in the aircraft folders but in a specific Gauge folder of FS. To identify which is which may reveal a daunting task at best!!Hugo

Another option would be to unzip the files to a cd. Using WINZIP to create a folder for each aircraft you unzip. All the gauge folders and such would be unzipped to one folder. You could than take that CD to your buds house and copy over the folders at that point thereby losing nothing yet accomplishing what you want. I've done it this way on several occasions and have never run into an issue.Bobby

One nice thing about FS2k4 is that you can put the gauges in the panel folder so everything but the effects are all together making if very easy to delete or move an aircraft.

Thanks to all who have responded. I can go back and check my specific aircraft folders to see if any have "special" panel and or guage assignments. I think at this point most use the "default" panels and gauges except for one or two. Just have not been satisfied with some of the panels the way they work in FS2004. some of the aircraft files I use were designed specifically for FS2002 with some patching for FS2004, but I have found that allot of the aircraft designed for FS2002 work well in FS2004, at least I have not had any problems with them, the panels on the other hand have been hit & miss. Most of the aircraft have been FFX/SGA which I have had good luck with. Again, thanks for all your help, looks like I have a couple of options based on everyone's feedback.Joe
