February 16, 201115 yr Team AVSIM starts the 9th annual Round the World Race on February 19th.In this event, teams run a relay race around the world—passing the virtual baton every two hours. The race takes place in real time and real weather, and runs continuously for about four or five days. The participants are members of some of the main forums in flight simulation: AVSIM, FlightSim.com, Sim-Outhouse, and iFlyOnline. Most legs are flown in propeller driven aircraft but there are numerous opportunities for jet jockeys as well. The competition has been spirited, with recent races decided by margins of less than an hour. Traditionally, AVSIM has been supported by the Tom Allensworth and the forum staff—to make the event work well for all concerned. Last year, Team FlightSim won to make the current rankings of winners: AVSIM (4), FlightSim (3), Sim-Outhouse (1), and the relative newcomers iFlyOnline ready to win their first gold medal.Imagine flying through a dark foggy Himalayan night with minimal visibility. You must land at a mountain-encircled airport with dim lights and no radio navigation. And your teammates are counting on you to nail the landing while sixty race participants are watching your every move...As one of the veterans once said, this is the most fun you can have with your pants on.To sign up or to follow the race, take a look at the AVSIM Round the World Race Forum here:http://forum.avsim.net/forum/227-avsims-round-the-world-race-forum/ You can find the "RTWR 2011 Registration and Recruitment " thread. Or look at "A Little Story for any Potential New Recruits."The main race site is here: http://www.fsrtwrace.com/ As ever, Team AVSIM is looking for new pilots. While the team has a number of veterans, the length of the race and the intensity of the flying mean that newcomers will prove essential to any success.Look forward to seeing you.Mike MacKuen (for the whole team) --Mike MacKuen
