Solving the 2D clouds no overcast issue?

Featured Replies

I did a search and found that there are some good new cloud textures out there for FS9. Do any of the new textures solve the default lack of solid (no see through) overcast?

Several weeks ago I discussed a method of modifying the cirrus overcast bitmaps so they could be used to make the overcast opaque, and also eliminate the "hole" around the aircraft. I offered to upload them, but there seemed zero interest. But the procedure is simple--you simply wipe the alpha channel from the bitmaps (set it to 255,255,255) with something like DXTBMP.You then set up a cirrus layer--it only needs to be one foot in thickness, directly underneath the deck you wish to make "solid". There is one drawback--a visible seam may appear. I resolve this easily by making the cloud deck immediately above my cirrus layer overcast as well.I've used this method day and night--the effect is convincing, especially at night when you descend through the deck on final with a 1500 ft. ceiling....I had hoped one of the third party weather generation programs could have somehow programmed this in for simulating true overcast conditions.... Maybe someday...-John
