does anyone know of a decent utility or gauge which will play mp3 files whilst in flight, somthing that is accessable from the cockpit??

Yes - radiocd4.zip, available right here at Avsim.Boogie.

Another alternative would be the Audio Panel Configurator v1.5.This excellent utility allows you to play mp3's via a playlist that is loaded into the kneeboard in fs2004. Supports other formats of media as well.Check out apc.zip on avsim or flightsim.
