December 23, 200322 yr I had a situation today that I haven't encountered before since I fly mostly General Aviation. The tale is this...I decided I that I would try my hand at one of the heavies. So I setup an A320 at my hometown airport that is controlled, has three of the major air carriers (Delta - 757, Northwest - DC9 and Southwest - B737), and serves as home to an ANG KC135 unit. So far with FS9, I have just dutifully complied with the runway assignment without much thought. This particular airport has two intersecting runways, 18 - 36 and 5 - 23. 18/36 is 1600 feet long, 75 feet wide, has no precision approach and in the real world, is used for small GA. 5/23 intersects 18/36 about 300 feet from the approach end of 23, is 10000 feet long, 150 feet wide, has full CAT II ILS on both ends and used by the ANG, the airliners, most multi-engine and corporate jets.In the RW, simultaneous operations from both runways are conducted. It is common place to get a clearance from the tower something like...73G, cleared to land runway 36. Hold short runway 23.So, in my learning situation today, I set up no weather, no wind, no clouds, nothing. And ATC tells me to taxi to 36. Well for the first time, I had to question the RW assignment.Well, as you might imagine, even if I knew what I was doing, there was no way I could get an A320 off in 1600 feet much less land it. And FS would not let me change Runways. I ended up taking off of 5/23 and getting the admonishment of taking off without clearance...How do you get ATC to let you change runways when the one they pick isn't what you want or more important what you need for the type aircraft you are in???Thanks for your help.BobL
December 24, 200322 yr This might help BobL, >...I set up no weather, no wind, no clouds, nothing<The "no weather" setup displays in FS as Wind Direction Hdg360(or 000) and zero winds. FS still reads the 360 direction, that's why you were directed to Rwy36. You can add/change a new direction for winds and get the rwy you want in the weather section; go for the "Real Weather" download and be directed to a rwy by the actual wind direction; select rwy to start from in the 'go to airport' section. There may be even a few more ways that I can't think of off hand. Hopefully this will get you placed on a desirable rwy.
