January 11, 200422 yr This may seem on the face of it a pretty simple question, but I have to ask... so please indulgeIve been gettign by witha 17inch monitor for flight sim (secondary 15 inchers for fsnav, etc.)Ive been looking at a 21 inch monitor at our local computer storeBut I was wondering, is there that much difference between a21 and, say, a 19 inch, in terms of what you can really see in flight sim?I figure that if you go bigger, you dont really see more, just thatit seems bigger.LIke I said, it must seem like a previous obvious, no-brainer questionbut sometimes there are hidden issues in even the most lowly questionthat maybe most people dont think of.Thanks in advance.John W'Newburgh, IN
January 11, 200422 yr Picture's the same - just bigger.Just like a bigger TV screen - on a big screen you don't get to see what is just out of sight on the smaller set - it's still out of the shot. All the same - the bigger the better - I'm sure it will improve your FS enjoyment .
January 12, 200422 yr I personally have a 19" inch monitor for my flight simming and enjoy it. But considering how close I sit to the monitor when "flying", I would find a 21 inch monitor too big. When it comes time to get a new monitor, I may even opt for a 17 incher........... IMO that would be more than enough for my flight simming enjoyment. I believe it is more important to have a monitor with good resolution, showing crisp, clear pictures and lettering.-Lindy
January 12, 200422 yr I liked my previous 22", and the 21" I have now. Run both in 1600*1200*32 resolution which provide detailed pics...But then my 17 1/2" widescreen laptop looks pretty good too!L.Adamson
January 12, 200422 yr If you've got space but worried about money..........buy a 19". I've got a 19" CTX EX950F CRT. Its just the right size. A friend has a 21" and I find that too much to look at.
January 12, 200422 yr I very happy with my 21" monitor. Could never go back. Size does matter ;) expecially with the panels getting much more complicated, those wee dials are so much easier to read once I moved up from a 19"-------------------Racartronit means something, but I just can't remember what
January 12, 200422 yr I agree, bigger is better, but only up to a point. I had a 17" monitor and upgraded to a 21". A friend upgraded to a 19" at the same time, so we were able to make comparisons. While I am more than pleased at the results (I couldn't run at a res of gereater than 1280x960 on the old monitor, now I can go all the way to 1600x1200x32 without AA and get the same results fps-wise) I have to say that the difference between 19" and 21" is much less than the difference between 17" and 19". The extra size does not mean extra field-of-view unless you also use the old monitor to create a second view (which I can't as I don't have the room). What does impress is the extra detail that is now visible on panels and aircraft. But you can see that on the 19" just as well.My recommendation is to choose the monitor according to the desk footprint and cost, rather than the screen size. They're probably more important factors than the actual sizre of the image. At least for FS, anyway.Allcott
