February 14, 200422 yr Hi,I would like to paste in my posts on the Captain Sim support forum for people here to look over. If you have any ideas on why I would be having a problem with just this one aircraft I wouldn't mind hearing what you have to say. It is just so strange to me that this is occuring with this aircraft only! As you'll see if you continue to read, the problem does not subside even if I load/switch to another aircraft. I have to completely exit from FS for the problem to stop.-----------------------------------Hi,I seem to have what I would consider a pretty serious problem with the Yak-3. Whenever I load it up I get a little pause that last about a half a second. This half second pause happens about every 3 seconds. I can't live with it! x( I wish I had a clue as to what mght be wrong. I am thinking that it might possibly be an Active Camera conflict of some sort. But I am not sure. This only happens with the Yak-3 and it is carried on even if I switch over to a different aircraft. In other words, the problem is does not exist if I load up any other aircraft and only manifests itself upon loading the Yak-3, and then problem remains even if I switch to any other aircraft after the Yak-3 has been loaded. While writing this it occured to me to remove the ActiveCamera2004.dll and see if that does anything. Like I said, I don't know if that's the problem though. I will report back as to whether or not removing the .dll had any effect.Jim OneTinSoldier============== Posted: Fri Feb 13, 2004 5:43 pmWell, it's not a problem with ActiveCamera2004. Removing the .dll made no difference. So I put it back in my 'Modules' folder.Another thing I'd like to mention. I have mostly been loading up Bill Lyons DeHavilland 82 (DH.82) Tiger Moth before and after the Yak-3 to try and figure out what's going on. The DH.82 loads up with it's engine compartment open. If I load the DH.82 up first I have no problem pressing Shift + E + 2 to get the engine compartment to close. After loading the Yak-3... forget it. I switch to the DH.82 and CANNOT get the engine compartment to close(I tried many times), and have the mini-pause as well(I call it that becaue it's a little longer than what I would call a micro-stutter). I have tried a couple other aircraft besides the DH.82 and the mini-pause occurs with any of them after the Yak-3 has been loaded. Just to make it clear, the mini-pause occurs as soon as I load the Yak-3.Please help!JimOneTinSoldier============== Posted: Fri Feb 13, 2004 6:49 pmDecided to make one more post.I tried my CS Legendary F-104 and Legendary 727. No problems with them. I also ran the Yak-3 TCE before I tried the Yak-3 again. No change, mini-pause is still there. I really want to be able enjoy this plane! ;)And I wanted to leave you with my system specs.Jim_________________3.06 Ghz Intel P4 on Asus P4T533-C(533 MHz FSB), 1 GB PC1066 Samsung RDRAM, NEC MultiSync FE2111SB 22" Monitor, ATI Radeon 9700 Pro w/ v4.1 Catalyst Drivers, DirectX 9.0b, Audigy2 Soundcard, 120 GB w/8 MB Cache Western Digital HD, WinXP Pro SP1============== Posted: Sat Feb 14, 2004 4:09 am Post subject: Just a suggestion, dunno if it'll work: try going back to the Catalyst 3.10 drivers and see if the problem persists. ATI just released the Catalyst 4.2 driver, maybe you could give those a try.I tried loading the DH-82 first, then the Yak, then the DH-82 again. I (still) use the 3.10-drivers at the moment. No problems whatsoever. Your computer has similar specs to mine, so it's not a question of power.Lawman==============Posted: Sat Feb 14, 2004 5:43 amHi Lawman,Thank you for the suggestion. I may try the Catalyst 4.2 drivers, but I don't think it's a driver issue. I have serious doubts that a video card driver issue would be the cause for this mini-pause problem with just the Yak-3 and only the Yak-3.Jim OneTinSoldier==============Posted: Sat Feb 14, 2004 8:34 amHello,In a nod to you Lawman I have seen something that I think may relate this to being a graphics problem. But what the nature is as to the cause of the problem, even if it is a graphics problem, is still a mystery.I noticed something when I ALT-Tabbed out to my desktop. Let me start by saying that I think all users of ATI cards know about problems when FS2004 first came out. Flashing menus, corrupted text and graphic images when scrolling a 2D window that was on top of a 3D viewport. For example, scrolling the kneeboard(text). Scrolling through the FS2004 Lessons, or Lane Wallace's stories about the aircraft in Century of Flight(text and graphic images). Well, ATI fixed the issue starting with the Catalyst 3.9's(IIRC). The difference is that you no longer have corrupted text and/or images when scrolling. But, you will notice that the scrolling is sluggish, the scrolling kind of stutters. Well, after selecting the Yak-3 and I ALT-Tab to my desktop that is what I get while I'm on my desktop and FS2004 is minimized to the taskbar. No corruption, but sluggish/stuttering scrolling in any 2D window. Such as scolling down in Explorer... or scrolling up and down a text file in Notepad. This does not occur when I have selected any other FS2004 plane and then ALT-Tab to my desktop. It only happens after the Yak-3 has been loaded. And after the Yak-3 has been loaded it does not matter if I switch to another aircraft... I still have the mini-pause behavior I have described and sluggish scrolling after ALT-Tabbing to my desktop.Rather than let my driver control Anti-Aliasing I thought I would try and let FS2004 control the AA and see if that made any difference(grasping at a long shot here). I went into my 3D Tab and checked 'Application Preference'. Fired up FS2004 and went to Setttings --> Display --> Hardware Tab and checked the Anti-Aliasing checkbox there. No change. Still getting the mini-pause.Of course I am wondering why I am the only one who has, so far, encountered this problem with the Yak-3.JimOneTinSoldier============== Posted: Sat Feb 14, 2004 10:14 amOK Jim. I'm grasping at straws here...I have no problems with the Yak and my 9700 Pro card. I sometimes get a stutter here and there but with everything I've got running at the same time I'm not all that disappointed. There are a couple of settings that I played around with that did seem to stop the constant stutters and texture reloads that I have had in the past.I suggest that you try these (at your own risk of course and in no particular order) one at a time reloading FS9 in between each tweak to see what the results are:In your display properties, go to Advanced and the SmartGart tab. Turn off fast writes. You will probably need to reboot. I have heard many people say to just leave this off because it doesn't work right. I have had it off for a long time with no problems.Under the troubleshoot tab unselect Write Combining. This is the setting that seems to have made a big difference for me. I always turn it off.In FS9 Options try toggling the Render to Texture setting on and off checking your results in between. Most people say that performance is degraded with it on. My system seems to operate better and actually be a little smoother with it on.None of these changes should harm anything and sometimes it is just finding the right combinations of settings. One thing is for sure, a great setting for one machine is not always the best for another.Keep looking and you should find that sweet spot._________________PhilC 'Snowman'EFC-124============== Posted: Sat Feb 14, 2004 10:30 amPhil,Thanks for the suggestions. I may try them. If I do I'll let you know what happened. I would be more anxious to try them, but, I am no stranger to tweaking. I have my FS2004 running top notch. I am the author of a thread and document at Avsim titled 'FS2004 and WinXP Optimization Guide V2'. But several hundred books could be written on what I don't know and don't understand. ;) Just trying to let you know that it's not as if I know nothing about tweaking and changing settings, trying this.. trying that, ect. But I am at a very big loss on why this is the ONLY aircraft exhibiting this strange behavior. With all the messing around I've done to get FS2004 running top-notch at 1600x1200 resolution with 4x AA and 16x AF, I hate to start to have to mess around for just one aircraft. I hope you can understand where I'm coming from. This is the only aircraft causing me trouble. And I have many many aircrafts installed. A little of this is scenery and MyTraffic 2004, but on my 42.5 GB FS2004 partition, I only have 3 GB's left. :-lolCheers,JimOneTinSoldier-----------------------------------Any ideas anyone? Strange or what? I am about to install the Catalyst 4.2 drivers. I don't think it'll solve the problem. But hey, you never know until you try I guess.Cheers,Jim
February 14, 200422 yr Hi,I'm still hoping someone on here might come up with an idea as to what could be causing this. The problem I have with this aircraft has not changed since I updated to v4.2 of the Catalyst drivers. Currently, I am requesting one set of 32-bit textures, as opposed to the DXT3 textures it comes with, to see if that does anything. Whether or not they'll deliver me a set I don't know. I don't know if this is a problem with the aircrafts' graphics or it's configuration. I suspect it could be a graphics issue though. If no one one here has any ideas that's ok, but I'm still hoping someone might! :-zhelpCheers,Jim
