C172N Skyhawk II Float Plane keeps tipping over in water

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,For some unknown reason my C172N Skyhawk II Float Plane just tips over when I start on the water or any time as soon as I land on the water. None of my other foat planes do this!!It just keels over to the port side seconds after I start a flight.Has anyone experienced this before?Regards,Mike

This shouldn't do that, but check to make sure: a. you are fully on the water (I'm assuming you are) , b. you don't have 1 fuel tank full and the other one empty, and (most likely) c. what winds do you have? The latter, if you have a very strong crosswind, or you are turning out of wind while on the water, can cause a seaplane to upset (here and IRL).

Looks like it's the weather that's the culprit. I have REX2 and when I use the REX weather engine the plane tips over even with a calm windless day set!I have a similar problem with my regular land based GA aircraft where I have to input max left or right rudder just to stay straight on the runway. Switch back to MFS weather and no problems.

It sounds like REX is giving you high winds and not "telling" FSX so it looks like the winds are calm. Unfortunately in a sim you can't see waves or true-life windsocks. What you are describing is exactly what I see when putting in very high winds. Try using the FSX wx engine and sticking winds in at about 40 kts, then try taxiing down or crosswind and see what happens. You'll find the downwind float will "grab" and you'll roll to that side and over. On wheels when taxiing downwind you'll be all over the place - one second going left, the next right. That should confirm the issue.

That's also a serious problem with the Milviz T-38. It looks like some weather add-ons do a really bad job in simulating wind and turbulence :(

They do Bernt. Even in AS2012 I've had the programs tell me I've got a 12 kt wind, but I have wind sounds installed that kick in at 30 kts, and I can clearly hear them when sitting on the ground with the engines off. That means the winds are 30 kts or better, which is a long way from 12 kts. That will play hell with trying to turn a seaplane out of wind (or even turning into wind - want to hold how fast you make that turn to as slow as possible).
