March 4, 200422 yr Is it possible, you amazing freeware developers, to retrofit some aspects of FS2004 into 2002? eg. Weather, or autogen, or ground textures, or ATC? Seems, if you could get some of the good bennefits from 2004 into 2002, then you could run 2002 at the performance level we used to get and virtually "have your cake and eat it too."This is probably a stupid question, but there are some similarities between the two and it sounds plausible to me, the techinically inept. What do you guys think?
March 4, 200422 yr Weather and ATC, impossible. There are two different sets of code, and Microsoft has the source. Pretty much ditto for extended autogen, although it may be possible with the non-XML autogen. Textures have been ported over before.I have to say though, that I run FS2004 at or exceeding the performance level I had in FS2002, on an 800MHZ machine. The trick was in matching the scenery detail visually, rather than trying to get the display sliders between the two in synch. In fact, if I enable autogen in FS2004 (with the .xml file renamed), my fps exceeds that of FS2002 (avg. fps w/full autogen in FS2002 was 18, in FS2004 it's 20 or more). Many other issues related to performance between the two sims were caused by comparing apples to oranges. I'd argue that as much as half the simmers never get any distance away from the key scenery areas like LAX, NYC, ORD and Seattle. Those areas are much richer in COF with a tradeoff in performance. IMHO, the best platform for FS2004's textures, weather and ATC is FS2004...-John
