Reformatting, Question about addons.

I am currently reformatting my computer and was curious if there was a "Right" way to install my addons... I have heard that the addons should "stack" a certain way? So here is what I have...GEXFEXUTXASEREXThanks!

The order of install doesn't matter at all, but it's more convenient to first install (and update) UTX and then GEX because afaik when you installed GEX and run it, there is an option that takes care of how it works with UTX. However, you could install GEX first, then UTX and run GEX again to make sure it will work with UTX... But since you have nothing installed yet, install UTX first and then GEX. Why make things more compliceted without reason. :wink:The others can be installed in any order you want (also before or after UTX and/or GEX). FEX and REX obviously do the same thing to a certain degree, so you have to take care what textures you install using both programs, but the order if install doesn't matter at all. (I don't know why you use both FEX and REX...? You might consider only installing one of them, unless you of course like specific textures from both. I suppose you know how to use textures from both FEX and REX in FSX...?)

Oh boy, you bought them both without investigating...? REX is more popular because 1. it's cheaper then FEX, 2. it offers more then FEX and 3. it's still being developed. They both offer (simply put) better textures for clouds and waters and so on, but REX also has, apart from more kinds of textures, a weather engine (which is okay, but ASE it a lot better) and a flight planner (which no one uses...).So REX is more popular but some people like the FEX clouds a bit more. FEX is an older addon, and that's the main reason some people have both (they bought REX later on when it was released). I think that 99% of new simmers only buy REX because it simply has more bang for the buck and more future. And a lot of people who have both only use REX...You CAN use both because both programs let you choose which textures you want to install and which not. So you could use clouds from FEX and water reflections from REX or any other combination. You HAVE to watch out which options you set because with the default settings EVERYTHING gets installed which will mean that if you run FEX and install textures and then run REX, REX will overwrite all FEX textures... (hope you still understand what I am saying... :( )I own both FEX and REX but only have REX installed.BTW You have ASE: if you had AS2012 (the newer version) you could have done without both FEX and REX because AS2012 now has become something similar to REX... (Boy, things did get complicated with all those overlapping addons over time... :( )

What an excellent explanation. So now I'm thinking about AS2012 and going without REX and FEX all together. Thank you so much for your time. I love this forum. :D
