March 19, 200422 yr Hi. Could someone please tell me the minimum startup requirements for Windows XP Pro. In 98SE it used to be Explorer and Systray, but I have no idea for XP.Thanks,Jeff
March 19, 200422 yr Hi, Jeff. You have two options:1) Use FSAUTOSTART written by Ken Salter. You can find it in the library. It's a neat little program. I'm using it and I'm very happy with it.OR2) Do a Clean boot. You do this by doing the following: a. Click on Start b. Click on Run c. Type in MSCONFIG d. Hit OK e. On the General Tab, click on Selective Startup f. Uncheck LOAD STARTUP ITEMS g. Go to the Services tab h. Check HIDE ALL MICROSOFT SERVICES i. Click on Disable All j. Click on Apply k. Click on Close l. Click on RESTART
March 20, 200422 yr I read posts by Ken Salter and tried his software, then studied the tweaks offered by Jim (OneTinSoldier), then I went to www.blackviper.com and followed the guidelines listed there to optimize WinXP. I ended up with four different configurations:1. Default -- (according to Blackviper.com)2. Safe -- (minimum services for safe operations according to Blackviper.com)3. Profile 1 -- (my original configuration)4. Games (all unnecessary services and startup items disabled)I have a dedicated machine so I have always rebooted before running FS. Now, when I reboot, I see a menu listing the four configurations. When I select "Games" from the menu, I end up with about 16 or 17 processes running (depending upon the number of SYSHOST processes which have started). I don't know how much this has helped my performance but it sure didn't hurt. R-
March 21, 200422 yr Thanks, Ron. I tried FSAUTOSTART, but never could get it to install(I don't remember the error message now). Your method, Blackviper.com, sounds very good. I've got a virgin system now except for AOL which has never caused me any problems before. I had the system built mainly for flight simming so don't need a lot of other stuff happening. Thanks for your suggestion. I'll try it tomorrow.Jeff
