Do I need to upgrade?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I recently bought FSX with a view to preparing for some add-ons that are being developed only for FSX - most notably fo the FSL A320. I'm no computer expert and don't really get too involved in the specifics of a machine as my previous one ran FS9 just fine but knew that it was underequipped to deal with FSX to the same extent.

To get an idea for how bad the situation would be I installed the iFly 737 with the FSX upgrade as well the UK2000 Heathrow scenery and did an IFR circuit in the Gray and Rainy conditions and default display settings (if you need to know these settings just say so). The only change I made was to increase the airline traffic volume to 100%. This way it would be as if I'm in an online flight during typical UK weather, as I would do in FS9.

Over the course of a circuit I'd say I averaged around 6fps, not really flyable. I tried changing some setting such as resolution, FPS limiter, animations and cloud draw with only a variance in 1 or 2fps. I'm reading the stickied posts on this forum about how to improve FPS also.

Are there any other reliable resources that people could recommend to improve FSX FPS, and is it worth updating some of my PC components to better prepare for the 'big switch'? My relevant specs are below:

Intel i3 530 @ 2.93GHz (4 CPUs) ~2.9GHz

4096MB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce GT240

No other applications running

Sorry to say, but your computer is way too weak.

There is no one component for upgrade. Throw away and get an FSX computer. Not an office PC (is what you now have, quite a mighty one for an office computer).

Ehmmm... no. Can't do that in FSX. Not even on monster machines.

Stop comparing FSX to FS9. Two different pairs of shoes. FSX has to be highly balanced, but it also needs quite fast hardware. Read about it in the guide first, then you'll get some ideas.

Srdan,

Thanks for your reply. This is what I expected as it was definitely bought as a 'general PC' before I really got into the simulation world. I'll hold off until the FSL gets released and then look at a new machine. The material here is definitely thorough!
