May 6, 200422 yr Possibly a stupid question but I really wonder what this instrument is (see attached picture. I assume that it has to do with turn coordination or so. I never have seen it moving/animated.
May 6, 200422 yr Hi Thor. Actually, that is an aid to help the pilots adjust thier seats for optimum viewing height. Basicaly, you are supposed to rasie your seat high enough, that the balck and yellow balls should overlap. This will then have you sittiing at the mfgs. recommended viewing height. IE: usually high enough to see over the glareshield and see the aircraft's nose. Particuarlly, when dooing a low visibility approach. We have them on our Boeing 737; I personally don't use them as I think it puts me too high in the seat. I'm already high enough for viewing the HUD. Hope this helps answer your question.Best,Dave
May 6, 200422 yr What a simple and ingenious device! Perhaps they should put them in cars. No more grannies looking THROUGH steering wheels, eh? LOLAlan
May 6, 200422 yr And boy, do those seats raise! I was with Dave ("Aerostar") above, in a 737-200 cockpit a few weeks ago, trying out the various seat positions. This aircraft had not been flown in about 2 years, so the seat adjustments were stiff.Well, I finally forced the height adjustment to work, and wham!It took maintenance personnel about an hour to get my head out of the eyebrow window! :-lolOkay, not quite, but those seats sure do raise high. Could not see the nose on the 737 when finally at a comfortable position / height, however, and I'm 6' tall, but I got all of the glare shield and the wiper.Talk about sitting "tall in the saddle". ;-)Regards,http://www.dreamfleet2000.com/gfx/images/F...RUM_LOUF_A2.jpg
