May 9, 200422 yr i need help with this scenario. boeing 777 departs toronto pearson en route to frankfurt. 17 miles from heathrow engine 1 goes up in flames and pilot orders it to be shut down. he contacts heathrow ATC for an emergency landing and is given clearence. prepares for landing, begins decending, realises landing gear is jammed. he is now 9 miles from the runway. what would be the best thing to do and how should he do it . the plane has 20% fuel left and is carrying 85% of its max gross weight.
May 9, 200422 yr My suggestion( assuming engine fire is out)---1: Divert to Stanstead (Less traffic more space etc etc)2: Arriving Stanstead hold to get fuel down to minimum OR dump fuel to absolute minimum( Holding probably better as will give airport authorities more time to prepare for what is inevitably going to be messy one way or another),3: When all other possibilities have been tried ( hand cranking u/c etc - is this possible on a 777?)go for belly landing with absolute minimum fuel and lowest possible touchdown speed.4: PrayDave
