Carviation...

Featured Replies

Hi everybody You might find this an interesting read: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/05/15/nextfest_wrap/Flying cars... 340 mph... This ultra-light technology is really exciting... Yep, 2004, year zero of the flying cars... Aviation is not dead, but starting to smell funny... Hehe. Now, 'carviation' is hip! Kind regards Jaap

Hmmm....half a million? Where can I sign up and buy one hehe

LOL. Some of the folks driving the California freeways at 90mph scare me to death. Couldn't imagine what kind of carnage they could create with that thing.Actually, I used to work for a company that was located right next door to this fellow's operation. He's his own urban legend in these parts. We always knew when they would be testing one of their scale models and always looked forward to taking a few minutes to watch them crash. Some were very spectacular.A brilliant saleman, he could sell fire to the Devil. He subsists off small grants from various government agencies and, of course, investors who are taken by his design. He also has other products that help pay the bills. He hires mostly young engineers from the local university, and they come up with some pretty interesting ideas. He's been working on this thing for the better part of 30 years but has yet to fly one. He always has a mock-up available, and I've sat in a few. They are very comfortable in a couchy sort of way.Greg

I hope you need more than a drivers license to fly that thing.David

Hi guys, desillusion has struck..! No flying cars probably... Read this: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/05/18/flying_car_letters/and this: http://www.downside.com/scams/moller/Greg, we got a live demonstration of your statement and a brilliant example of somebody selling fire to the devil... The guy's in all sort of trouble apparently. The SEC, etc. Well, on the good side, Fred doesn't have to save up anymore and David need not worry about carviation chaos in our skies... Hehe. However, I still wonder why Aldous Huxley came up with flying as common transportation means? Cheers and thanks Kind regards Jaap

As soon as I saw the Carviation title, I suspected it had something to do with Moller....More interesting--and possibly closer to reality than Moller's vision, is the Cartercopter (www.cartercopters.com). I'm still waiting for someone to model the Cartercopter for MSFS.... Personal hovercraft have been available as well--probably the most common is the Ultrasport. I tried to get a 3-view of the Ultrasport so I could model it for MSFS, but the company never responded.Last--although it doesn't go 300mph, the gyrobee is the closest and cheapest way to get over the mess on the freeways.... Who needs 300mph when today I was stuck in traffic for an hour behind a rollover.... I'll settle for 55mph in 3 dimensions...-John

I own a machine shop... all we do is precision machining. It's the type of place Moller's young engineers like to hang out (in fact, many of them do when they attend UC Davis. We do a little work for two of their engineering departments). I won't do any work for Moller unless it's COD. Period. Consequently, they don't send that much to us (hooray!).I will say this: The engineering calcs that one guy did in one of your links are not valid. Moller does own proprietary and patented technology that makes that fellows assumptions meaningless.Lived in this neighborhood for 30 years... learned early on what that guy was all about. But it is way cool to watch those scale models crash. Better than going to a movie!GregP.S. Shouldn't this thread be moved to the Hanger Chat?

"P.S. Shouldn't this thread be moved to the Hanger Chat?"Wondered the same thing when I saw it here, but threads introduced over the weekend sometimes slip under the radar of the forum moderators.I used to live not too far from Davis--saw Moller's "just around the corner" aircar featured on "Evening Magazine" close to twenty years ago, if not longer. To somewhat make this topic related to MSFS, there are FS2002/FS2004 aircar models out there. But I never got into flying 'em--it's really hard for me to fly something that I don't see happening, unless it's a Jupiter 2 recreation or Star Trek Shuttlecraft--both aircraft more likely to appear in "real flight" in our time before Moller's Skycar :)

"...unless it's a Jupiter 2 recreation or Star Trek Shuttlecraft--both aircraft more likely to appear in "real flight" in our time before Moller's Skycar"LOL, Yep. His DiscoJet mufflers are pretty nice. That technology went into the SuperTrapp series of mufflers. He sold it to Kerker about 15 years ago.The guy has some good ideas. Bringing them to market in an honest way has always been the challenge for him.Greg
