June 19, 201213 yr So, I've got an HP tower, just about a year and a half old, and I've got an AMD Anthlon II x2 at 3.1 ghz (stock), with an AM3 socket (not the AM3+ socket), 2 4gb sticks of RAM and 2 2GB sticks for 12GB total (originally 5GB stock), along with an AMD 6770 1GB graphics card (had no card stock), and a 550W power supply. I was wanting to get a processor upgrade, and I'm pretty sure my best option is an AMD Phenom II processor, either the x4 960T, or an x6 model. I've got 225$, and I'm using my computer for FSX, what should I get? Thanks! Piper
June 19, 201213 yr Motherboard make & model please? you basically need to look up your mobo's CPU compatibility list
June 20, 201213 yr Author I don't know where I'd find that, but, my model number is HP Pavillion 6653W. Here's a thread from some forum with a guy talking about his... http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/292898-any-am3-socket-or-core/ Oh, here's a thread at the HP Forums http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Hardware/CPU-not-supported/td-p/1264163 Apparently it's an N-Alvorix-RS880-uATX (Alvorix). Here's a pic and the stats http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02560084&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=4313690#N36 So apparently it'll take all of the Phenoms, as long as they're 95W (I got a 550W power supply, the first one was 230 or something).
June 20, 201213 yr The 960T would be a nice upgrade. It's a 95W TDP chip so it should work. Most, if not all X6 are 125W, so I guess they're all out of the question. Just found in newegg the OEM version of the 955 (95W) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113007 It will not be unlocked, but can still be overclocked if you are into OC
