Flying the "Hump" C-47B and C-46 Commando

Featured Replies

My uncle was in the Flying the Hump in ww2 but I was suprised that the C-46 was the main plane that did the job, it can fly higher faster, longer in range, and much more cargo. Iam looking for theflight plans of that time of flying the Hump, does anyone have a goodwebsite for this? Thanks.

You need to take a look at Michael Vone's FS2000 adventure for The Hump and at Alex Nicolson's CBI (China Burma India, four files) scenery for FS2000. They're all in the Avsim library.Do they work in FS2004? With some adaptation, which I am currently exploring myself. As far as I know, nothing else in FS has been produced for this epic period of our aviation history, which is surprising. A hunt on Google will give you loads of info on the era itself, mind you. Many, many C-47s flew the route. The Goon can achieve 20,000 feet - unpressurised, and very cold! - and often had to on the northern routes when avoiding Japanese aircaft looking for them from the south. That said, they rarely went that way - they left that to the C-46 Commandos - and usually tried for a more southerly route. My pal who flew the route many times tells me, however, that flying DC-3s at 17,000 feet was commonplace. Otherwise you could hit large, snowy objects. He should know, I guess. He talks of 100 knot crosswind challenges, 30' crab angles being standard practice and the occasional gust of 250 knots. No wonder they wore khaki pants. It really is a remarkable achievement that so many flew the route successfully and that so much was done at that time. Between June and December 1943 alone there were 135 major crashes on the Hump route, and records show they had 168 crew fatalities in that period. So, good luck!Mark "Dark Moment" BeaumontVP FleetDC-3 Airwayswww.dc3.airways.comhttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg
