fs2004 sound

Featured Replies

Hello I have recently bought a new graphics card: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro Atlntis. When I load my flight simulator 2004 I get no sound. Is it to do with the graphics card? The sound works perfect in windows. How do I fix this problem?ThanksWendy02

Hello Wendy,List your FULL System Specs. I'm mainly wondering what Sound Card you are using. Is it an onboard Sound Card? Or a PCI addon card such as a Sound Blaster? Do you have the latest drivers installed for it? Was your FS2004 sound working ok before you installed this newer video card? Run dxdiag...Start --> Run --> Type in 'dxdiag' (without the single quotes) --> Press 'Enter' on your keyboardLook at all the Tabs and run the tests. One thing that might make it work is to turn down the 'Hardware Acceleration slider' on the Sound Tab in there. This disables a sound card's hardware processing capabilites though and may may lower gaming performance.Regards,Jim

Hi my specs are:Athlon XP 2400+1GB Corsair memory 400mhzRadeon 9800 Pro 128mb graphics60gb hard drive450psusamsung dvd/combo driveThe sound was working fine before I installed the new graphics card. I have installed the pmdg 737ng software. When I load the microsoft planes I get no sound either. Sometimes it might work, other times more often it doesn't.Its onboard sound. And I have the latest drivers for it. Its a VIA onboard 6 channel sound chip. Typed in dxdiag. Says directmusic had a problem last time it was loaded. Any other suggestions?Hope this helpsWendy02

Any other>suggestions?>>Hope this helps>>Wendy02Yes.#1 - Since it says there was a problem with directmusic you might try reinstalling DirectX. You can download the DirectX 9.0b runtime redistributable installer from Microsoft. DirectMusic might be having a problem with your onboard sound card though, and I doubt DirectMusic is needed for FS2004 sound anyway. Not sure. Anyone know?#2 - IMHO, your best choice is to get rid of the crappy onboard VIA sound and get a Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2, Audigy 2 ZS, or some other quality addon sound card. This may not be what you wanted to hear but I'll bet it would almost certainly solve your sound problems. Most onboard sound cards are known to cause problems and don't usually give very good gaming(hardware acceleration) performance and/or sound quality, the exceptions being if you have an nForce2 or nForce3 motherboard. You didn't say whether or not you tried turning down the 'Hardware Acceleration slider' on the Sound Tab to see if that cured the problem. At least until you get a new sound card, hehe. ;)Lastly, what was the method you used to uninstall your old video card and install the new one? You may need to take several steps to ensure the old Video Card was completely removed from MS Windows. I would recommend something similar to the following steps. It's just an example hence the reference to 'GeForce2'...-----------------------------------------Downoload the latest ATI driver's, or whatever version of ATI driver you prefer to use, I use CAT 4.2's. Download a Utility called 'Driver Cleaner'. I've never used Driver Cleaner myself. I dont have a website/link for you but I'm sure someone else can point the way.Does anyone know if it's best to run Driver Cleaner in 'Safe Mode'?I would disable my internet connection. Control Panel --> Network Connections --> Right Click 'Local Area Connection' and click 'Disable'. This is so Windows doesn't try to install drivers 'automagically' from the Windows Update site. Then I would uninstall the Nvidia Drivers from 'Add/Remove Programs' in the Control Panel(this step may not be necessary since you are going to be running Driver Cleaner, I'm not sure but I'd do it anyway) and answer 'No' when prompted to reboot. Next I would go into the Device Manager and remove the GeForce2 video card from the Device Manager. Then I would run Driver Cleaner. Then shut down and physically remove the GeForce2 card and put in the new card. Then I would boot up and when prompted about installing software for new hardware that was found I would just click 'Cancel'.. twice if neccessary. Then I would install the latest ATI Drivers that I had already downloaded. Then I would reboot of course. And finally, I would re-enable my network connection.-----------------------------------------I hope that helps.Regards,Jim
