Video card not reporting accurate temps?

Featured Replies

I've seen something interesting while monitoring the temp of my video card. It idles higher (in the 40's) and peaks higher (in the 70's) than most online reviews and tests indicate. However, it's stable as a rock and the fan decreases to idle speed when the card is finished running a 3-d app. FSX doesn't even raise the fan speed by ten pct. So the card doesn't seem to be "thinking" that it's too hot.

Can card temp sensors be thrown off by other equipment? My cpu runs very cool and the case puts out minimal heat. It's in a very well ventilated area. Just for kicks, I put a desk fan in front of the computer and opened up one of the drive bays to allow circulation. The peak temp and idle temps didn't budge.

I've been very pleased with the card so far--it runs FSX for hours and hours. The card is a PNY Geforce 650 GTX w/2 GB Ram, it is not overclocked.

What makes you believe that's not accurate? Sounds correct to me. Turn up the default fan speed if you want cooler temps. BTW I always run at 60% over the default 40 or so..

I read some online reviews of the card saying that idle temps were in the 30's and load temps were in the 50's. As I noted the card seems happy at the reported temps. I did try cranking up the fan speed and it cooled the card a bit but it wasn't worth keeping the fan turned that high. After I installed the card I had several FSX sessions that lasted in the eight hour range and there wasn't even a hint of issues. I had the Valley screensaver running for a good two hours yesterday and there still weren't any issues. It makes me wonder how accurate the benchmarks are, and whether they reflect average temp conditions in the environment the computer is set up in (my computer room averages in the 75-79 degree range).
