April 7, 201313 yr I need a new computer so I went to a computer shop and asked them to build me a computer for FSX. I am not very knowledgeable in technicalities; but did some research and here what both of us came up with: Intel Core i7 3770 3.4GHz 4C 8T 8MB Cache s1155 77W Unlock Retail B Y Antec KÜHLER H2O 620 Liquid CPU Cooling System Asus iZ77 s1155 ATX 4DDR3 WiFi 2PCIe1/3xPCIe3.0(x16,x8,x4) Crucial 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Ballistix 240-pin DIMM PC3-12800 WD 1TB Black 3.5" SATA-6GB/s 7200rpm 64MB Dual Processor Asus GTX680-DC2-4GD5 ASUS GeForce GTX 680 4GB-GDDR5 HDMI,DPort,2xDVI PCIe3.0x16 Antec High Current 900W Power Supply ATX12V 2.3/ EPS12V 2.91 80+Bronze Antec Nine Hundred Two V3 Mid Tower ATX NO PSU Black Front USB/Audio StarTech 3.5in Front Bay 22-in-1 USB 2.0 Memory Card Reader Black Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium w/SP1 64-bit OEM w/CD Will those specs be sufficient to run my FSX with add-ons such as the PMDG 737 and 747, Wilco Airbus series, Captain Sim 767, many Mega Airports from Aeorosoft, REX, My Traffic 2010 and a few more? They don't want to overclock arguing that the warranty will be void. Will it make a big difference if not overclock? Thank you for your advice. Marcel Perron
April 7, 201313 yr Yes overclocking will make a big difference and I'm sure you will find an alternative supplier who will sell you a pre-overclocked system if you are not happy to overclock yourself. Your CPU should read 3770K if it is the unlocked version which you deffinately want it to be. Though for a PC built primarily for FSX you dont need the 3770K, the cheaper 3570K will give you much the same performance. Antec 620 - essentially its a closed loop watercooler which is for folks who just want to be able to say they have a watercooled system, there are more effective cheaper air coolers and certainly better closed loop systems - http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Antec-Kuhler-H2O-620-CPU-Cooler-Review/1233/7 If you're not overclocking you certainly don't need this cooler, if you are then you need a better one. Motherboard - I assume this is a P8Z77-V but which one, there are basic cut down models (LX2) to top spec ones (Premium) it would be good to know what you're getting. I have the Pro version and would recommend it but there may be better alternatives to the lower price range models. Memory - Crucial do many versions of their Ballistix memory Sport/Tactical/Tracer/Elite from cheap and slow to more expensive and faster, again clarify what you are getting and also consider faster 2400 memory. Hard Drive - I would recommend a Solid State Drive of at least 250GB but larger if you can afford it, and if you need more space a mechanical drive to store media etc on. Graphics - Nice. PSU - personally I would go for a modular unit with better than a Bronze rating something like the Corsair HX+ 750W Gold which costs about the same. Case - Personal preferance, but if you like the style it looks to be a good option.
