Is ATC sending me to the wrong run way?

Featured Replies

Hi all, My first time flying the heavies today. When I got to the destination, not only the ATC line me up too close to the airport, it also sent me to the wrong end of the runway I guess. When I look at the GPS, the runway only have ILS pointed in one direction, however, ATC sent me to approach from the opposite side of the ILS. How on earth am I going to land the 737. Beside, the APR button on the 737 sometime does not work. So, my questions is, how do you guys land the heavies?

It's normal for an airport to have an ILS only on one end of the runway. KRNO and KPAE are two that come to mind. ATC will only vector you to the non-ILS runway if the weather and the winds are favorable. In that case, they will set you up for a VISUAL approach. They will try to get you the longest runway possible for your type of aircraft.Keep in mind that if you are approaching from the other side of the ILS, you can sometimes use the BC autopilot button, which is the BACK COURSE. Also keep in mind that the BC will not have a GlideSlope. The only thing that'll keep you on is the PAPI or VASI lights on either side of the runway.
