Whoops! Help with .pln file formatting, please ....

Featured Replies

When editing a .pln file I opened it with NOTEPAD but accidentally allowed that annoying little box to be checked that says "Always open with this program you daft idiot, tee hee?". Suddenly all my .pln files were in NOTEPAD format. Aaarggh. Tried resetting them to be opened by FS9.EXE but that is not right either. What can I do? How should they be configured now that I have messed up? In other words, what program should I reallocate to them? Thanks for any help.Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg

Hi Mark. What do you mean, "in NOTEPAD format"? As far as I know *.pln files are simple text files and that is the native format of a NOTEPAD file. Are you concerned that the icons changed? If so, why does it matter, they should still work the same. Unless of course, I'm not understanding you at all. R-

Mark, This should work if you have Win XP, I'm not sure about other versions. Open Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types. Select pln from the list. Click on Advanced and then Remove to remove the assignment. Not sure what happens after that as I haven't done it before but I should think that's all there is to it.

You're both right, thanks. PLN files are text format, so I could probably have just left them as they were; but I feel more comfortable to have at least learned how to return them to their "anonymous" status. Thanks again, all is well now. This forum rocks, as ever.Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg

Hi Mark,Not sure that I understand what the issue is. I have numerous pln files that I often edit manually using Wordpad (and have that set as the program to open all of that type file). So any pln file I double click on in Windows Explorer will open as a txt file. Of course in FS9, I select it from the flight planner menu and it loads just fine. ATC, GPS, everything knows what the plan is. Could you explain some--might be something here I am overlooking. Thanks,Paul

Don't think there is an issue, Paul. I think I sort of thought that ANY file with that icon - which is basically a 'no program' icon - would then be only openable in NOTEPAD. That's rubbish, of course; it's the .PLN ending that counts, not the pretty little icon. Sometimes the obvious takes time to sink in, though. I was dropped on my head when I was a baby.Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg
