November 26, 200421 yr I am frustrated with FS9 clouds...i think i have got at least one update file to help improve the look, but still not happy...The issue is visibility in low ceiling conditions. When i enter the cloud layer, i can still see thru the cloud, although a little "grey".This is not realistic, and if visibility is down in the region, of course i don't see very far. Overcast ceiling just turns out to be hazy...I seem to remember that in 2K, that when you entered cloud layer, you were in the soup, no question, with 0 forward visibiliy.(we are talking overcast layers here, typically during IMC approaches, not broken/scattered layers)Anyone have any thoughts or easy fix's? I have searched the forum in the past with no great fix's.Thanks

November 26, 200421 yr reopro - Wow I was just thinking kinda the same things! As a new user to FS9 yesterday was the first time I set the cloud deck to "overcast" - and was a bit bummed to see that it was not the *opaque* layer I was expecting.Instead there were holes that I could see the ground through.Im still fiddling with sliders and such...perhaps Im missing something! And also what you said:>>I seem to remember that in 2K, that when you entered cloud layer, you were in the soup, no question, with 0 forward visibiliy.:)
November 26, 200421 yr I have a quasi fix available in the file library, but it can cause problems when viewing haze from above, since the texture I use is also used by the visibility function. Essentially, what my fix does is "plug" the gaps so when you are either above or below the cloud deck, you see a solid layer. But since it can cause problems with viewing haze, I suggest people make a backup of the files I update, and switch to my update only when full IFR is a must. This is one issue I am sorry Microsoft couldn't look at during the 9.1 update. Having to resort to payware or freeware to restore full IFR flying isn't a good solution. Also, although it's true that the sim will adjust overcast depending on system speed, even with the fastest systems, you can't get a true overcast due to the way the clouds are rendered in 3-d--all you have to do is look straight up. Imagine two balls of cotton that are very "hard". You'd never be able to get the two to mesh perfectly. The new 3-d clouds in MSFS are exactly that way. The key problem is there's no "overcast" 3-d cloud that makes a basically solid layer. Hence my fix tries to do that, although it's a poor fix at best. But at least its free. Here's a direct link:http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID...misc&DLID=42310-John
