January 5, 200521 yr Hi fellow simmers, since a few months I am looking for the ideal setup for my flightsim operation. The low dollar rate and the December sales helped me successfully to take the hurdle of buying software products on the internet, so I tried to find out which supporting software I needed. My hardware situation (a multimonitor PC and a networked laptop) promises nice opportunities. First of all I looked for a flightplanner and a moving map. Although I like to search the internet for information, specifications, opinions and reviews, the fact that I lost most of my Christmas holiday to this search without a final result, brought me to this conclusion: the consumer community of flightsim products needs a platform where alternative (software) setups for flightsimming are presented, state of the art, where the products that are on the market are compared objectively, and where this information is updated regularly (at least once a year). For a simple simmer like me it would for instance be very informative to find out how this new product Flightkeeper could fit in a setup, if it is comparable with regular flightplanners, and how you could use it together with other software. Most reviews are of course focussed on the product itself, and do not deal with these wider user issues. This type of service can be found in most consumer sectors with a certain level of professionalism. Observing that the software market in flightsimming has grown the past year both quantitatively and qualitatively, and that this trend might even intensify, I think that such a platform would be an important and urgent improvement of the infrastructure of our community. I am very grateful for all the time a lot of our fellow simmers are investing in the community, I would not like to miss that, but we should not leave the consumer information to them alone. The fact that discussions in the forums about products are regularly poisoned by suspicions (justified or not), is an additional argument to look for more objectivity. If a platform like this already exists somewhere on the net, please point me to it. If not, I would appreciate your comments. Herrie
