February 19, 200521 yr ok everyone im just looking for some pointers here on movies. i currently recorded a short film of me flying an UH60 Blackhawk. a friend of mine is a retired blackhawk pilot and likes to critique my flight progress. sometimes he is not available for multiplayer mode, so i started making movie clips. is there a good way to convert them over to avi or mpeg. any and all info is helpful, or a link to the thread that covers this if there is one. also i have tried using fraps, but my FPS drops so fast when using that program, anyone have a recommended program that maybe isnt so system demanding. im running on:athalon xp 2200+ 1.8ghz512ddr ramand my vid card is only a s3 prosavage8 32meg ddr, but it runs so much smoother than my ati radeon 7000 64meg card. well for everything except fighter ace.just thought that little bit of info might help with program reccomendations. Thanks,Jeff, a.k.a
February 19, 200521 yr Hi JeffDavid "Opa" Marshall came up a few days ago with a nice solution for creating FS9 video clips as screen savers (ssaver.zip). To create the clips you need several programs; FRAPS to capture your flight (a free version that works for 30 seconds or an unlimited one for $30), AVIMPEG ($21) for the video screensaver (not a must for making videos) and VirtualDub to compress the AVI files (free). The result will be a 30 MB clip for a 1 minute full size (1,024x768) DVD quality video. You can of course shrink the files but you will loose in quality. It is all explained in David's download. Now, after capturing several clips I looked for a video editor to make longer and fancier videos and came up with Ulead VideoStudio8 (another $99), So, for $150, that came out of my pension fund, I started playing Steven Spielberg. It cost me some money, but much less than all the expensive hardware and programs I looked into in the past and it gives me a lot of joy. With Ulead you can do nearly everything you see on professional video clips, including 2 audio channels, insert a second window, zooming, etc. Problem is the large files you have to handle, but if you intend to put them on DVD, so anyway you are going to end up with 100's of mb (about 600 mb for 20 minutes)I believe it will work with FS2002 too.Have funSeev K.
February 19, 200521 yr Sorry Jeff,But with your system is is going to be difficult to capture clips that are smooth. You just need more horsepower as Fraps will zap about 50% of your FPS when you record. The only other way I can see is to record to a video camera which is only cheap if you (or your parents), have one already or to a 2nd PC (not cheap), or to a VCR where the quality will suffer. All have pros & cons depending on what the intention of the video is. If it is for training and they need to look at your panel then forget about the VCR... quality will be too poor. If it's strictly for training turn all scenery sliders to minimum (and I do mean minimum), weather to clear, no AI, and stay away from cities. That might help a tad. There is another capture program out there like fraps but I cannot remember the name. Google it using "video capture" or "game capture".
February 20, 200521 yr yeah thats what i was afraid of. no biggie as i am in the process of a major build before our new baby comes along. lol after 2 kids money will be tighter for a while so im taking this 7months i have left before this second arrival and going to finally build the comp ive been talking about for some time. which in the end will solve the very same problem im having right now. the 2 comps i have now are rebuilt versions of 2 of the 4 comps my inlaws ahve gone through in the last 4 years. yeah lol they trash them pretty good by letting em get infected with viruses and spyware. like i stated before suprisingly enough this ole pc runs games like America's Army, and even the SWAT4 beta extremely smooth and not at complete min details either. i will keep in mind the advice given and also would like to thank you for the advice.thanks, jeff
