April 14, 200521 yr Is there any way to "kinda-sorta" simulate flying IFR in a non-radar environment, in FS. FS treats the whole world as if it were covered by radar but, in fact, most of the world isn't. Thanks.Bob
April 14, 200521 yr Bob,I can only comment on the US as I have not flown IFR elsewhere. It is true that in FS9 the default is to vector you to the approach, which is not always the case in an area with limited ATC. You can, though, select a different approach, or even the same one with a specific IAF. Then ATC will clear you to the fix and have you fly the approach as published with no handholding. That is very realistic. Is that what you mean?David
April 15, 200521 yr David Lee is right on. Requesting an approach, with a transition and the letting ATC clear you for that approach beats the vectors to the ILS. (That gets old after a while and they turn you 45 this way and 45 that way, just to have something to do I guess.Dennis

Enroute, when IFR in a non-radar environment, you are required to contact ATC at specific reporting points as shown on an IFR chart. This is because ATC can't see you on radar. In FS, ATC always has radar contact with you, which isn't really realistic.Maybe the next version of FS will have this feature.Bob
