Flying to Hawaii

Featured Replies

Hey All,I been thinking about flying to Hawaii as part of a larger adventure. I'm wondering what is the minimum aircraft and routing to get there from the mainland US. So far I'm thinking the best route is to fly to Alaska Korea Japan and island hop to Hawaii. If you do this the longest leg you have is about 1025 nm - most legs are around 600 to 700 nm. So then you need an aircraft with at least 1025 nm (plus a bit) as it's maximum range. A South America based route appears to have about 1500 nm as it's longest leg. I'm looking to do this with a small (like 4 seater or so) piston powered GA plane. Have I got this routing right for minimizing the longest leg? And what small single engine piston powered GA planes are suitable - payware or freeware? So far I'm thinking Socata 20GT or Extra 400 (even though it's a 6 seater) or something like that. I've even wondered about the ability to place a boat on the ocean and land by it with a float or seaplane and refuel but I've no idea how easy or hard it is to place a boat where you want it on the ocean and fly to it. I know this is easy with a big plane or a fast turbo prop twin but the whole point is how small a plane can it be done with.TIA for any responses!Take Care! -Ed-

I once did the flight to Hawaii in the default Lockheed Vega, starting from San Francisco.
