May 3, 200521 yr If anyone has installed this ubdoubtedly teriffic add-on and could post your installation methodology, I would appreciate it. There is a 4 step install instruction link...next to which is an "install notes" link...that I didn't notice since I just soldiered on with the 4 steps and pretty well botched everything up beyond my meager powers to correct.I'm sure it's my own stupidity but so many add-ons have auto-installers that have worked flawlessly for me I just become easily confused with the manual process. Thanks,Jim
May 3, 200521 yr Hi JimWell I thoight the installation was pretty idiot proof! Apparently not! :-)There are 5 files in total,TRIDENT_2.ZIPTRIDENT_3.ZIPTRIDENT_VC.ZIPTRIDENT_PANEL.ZIPTRIDENT_SOUND.ZIPPlus TridentAutoland.zip if you want to try the tutorial flights (recommended)The zip files are all set to use folder names and you just have to unzip them all directly to your main FS9 directory. Open the zip file, select "extract", point the installer to the location of your MAIN FS9 directory (mine is c:fs9) and hit "extract"What's to screw up?CheersTimhttp://members.chello.nl/t.westnutt/realair1.gif
May 3, 200521 yr Jim,It is really pretty easy! Delete everything you've tried to do with the Trident so far in your FS9 directory.....Now, copy the "HS121 Trident 3" folder (from within the TRIDENT_3/Aircraft folder) into your FS9 AIRCRAFT folder. Next, find your TRIDENT_PANEL folder. Open it, and then open the "Aircraft" folder that you see alongside the "Effects" folder. Inside the "Aircraft" folder, you'll see "DMFS Shared Files". Copy this "DMFS shared files" folder into your main FS9 "Aircraft" folder. Now, among all your other aircraft, you'll have the "HS121 Trident 3" and "DMFS Shared Files" folders.Go back to your downloads files, and find your "TRIDENT_VC" folder. Open it and once again you'll see an "Aircraft" and "Effects" folders. Open the "Aircraft" folder, and then open the "DMFS Shared Files" folder that you'll find. You'll now see two folders...copy the "HS121 Trident Panel VC" folder and paste it into your FS9/Aircraft/DMFS Shared Files folder. You should now have two Panel folders (VC, and non-VC) and the HS121 Documentation folder in there.Go back to your downloads, and find the "TRIDENT_SOUND". Open it, and it'll be just like the last step...Aircraft/DMFS Shared Files/HS121 Trident Sound. Copy thte "HS121 Trident Sound" folder and paste it into your FS9/Aircraft/DMFS Shared Files folder, alongside the two panel and documentation folders.Go back to your downloads, open the "TRIDENT_PANEL" folder, and open the "Effects" folder. Copy, then paste the three files into your FS9/Effects folder.Thats it!Start FS9 and change aircraft to the Hawker Siddley entry and pick whichever version you want to fly!I hope this helps, as it's well worth working with! The aircraft is superb, and the VC is excellent - that's high praise from me, as I haven't often liked the VC's supplied in a lot of airliners (The perspective has usualy looked 'off' to me and made it hard to read!). This one works well and has a lot of good viewing options, along with decent frame-rates and good instrument refresh rates!:)
May 3, 200521 yr Sorry mate, but all he really needs to do is unzip every zip file into the root FS9 and everything falls exactly into place.Your way sounds an incredibly long winded method of achieving a pretty simple solution! :-)From the Install notesInstalling the models is easy. Each download contains the correct folder structure for the models to work.If you extract each download straight into your 'Flight Simulator 9' folder, it will work.Simple huh??CheersTimhttp://members.chello.nl/t.westnutt/realair1.gif
May 3, 200521 yr Indeed yes, I'm sure it is, but I just rely on the Windows XP extraction /unzipper to extract the files to the same folder as the original zip. I prefer to manually manipulate the contents, and also it's nice to have them there as a quick and eaasy back-up just incase I mess something up repaints, or panel re-arranging) and just want to replace a single file!I know it 'sounds' a complicated method to install the Trident, but it works, and gives me full control over what goes where, and I have the choice as to whether to replace any existing files, if that option should occur, besides, it only takes a couple of minutes to complete anyway :)
May 3, 200521 yr Yes well, each to his own I guess! :-)"Whatever floats your boat" as the saying goes!CheersTimhttp://members.chello.nl/t.westnutt/realair1.gif
May 3, 200521 yr Excellent advice but one thing needs to be added. Depending on the ZIP program you use, you have to make sure the folder structure is generated. In my ZIP program, 'do not use pathnames' is automatically ticked and this would mean all files are extracted to the main FS9 directory. I have to untick that to make sure all files are actually put into the correct folders.Ray Keattch
May 3, 200521 yr < Oh, only that your instructions, as posted, don't work! (: You did other things...that I am sure you are used to doing...but others of us are not.Splitting atoms is easy...when you know how to do it...but don't try it at home!!!(:
May 3, 200521 yr PS: re: "What's to screw up"...the developer's instructions are to unzip to the AIRCRAFT folder in FS9 while you suggest sending everything to the MAIN FS9 folder. I guess following the instructions below is what got me screwed up. In addition there is a SPECIFIC warning from the developer re: the correct placement of the DMFS file. Possibly that placement is automatic if your instructions are followed but that being the case, why the warning? In addition there are separate Panel, VC and Sound zips in spite of the fact that the basic Trident3 zip contains those folders with files already in them. It was not at all clear that each of those zips should be downloaded in installed. Lots of developers have multiple downloads available that are ealier versions of others being offered. For example, the date on the Sound zip is back in Novmeber, so I had no clue that I needed to dl that file. But thanks for your help. I guess I'll go see if I can delete a bunch of stuff that has been scattered around and start over.Thanks,Jim1) Extract the zip & you will find an 'Aircraft' folder.2) Everything in this 'Aircraft' folder needs to go into your 'Flight Simulator 9/Aircraft' folder exactly as it is.3) If there is also an 'Effects' folder, the files inside need to go into your 'Flight Simulator 9/Effects' folder.4) There is no number four, so don't overcomplicate it.
May 3, 200521 yr It sounds to me like you didn't follow instruction 4 above. :) It really is hideously simple. Download each of the files and then one at a time extract them into a temporary folder and locate the folder inside the "aircraft" folder you've just extracted. Cut and paste that folder into the "aircraft" folder in your FS9 directory. You will end up with an "HS121 Trident 2" folder, an "HS121 Trident 3" folder, and a "DMFS Shared Files" folder in your "aircraft" folder. That is all. :)
May 3, 200521 yr >>.PS: re: "What's to screw up"...the developer's instructions>are to unzip to the AIRCRAFT folder in FS9 while you suggest>sending everything to the MAIN FS9 folder.<< Jim,No, the developer's instructions are to unzip into the main Flight Simulator folder!I've written out the instructions before but read David's instructions for yourselfhttp://www.dmflightsim.co.uk/notes_on_fs_aircraft_files.htmThere are 2 ways of doing it, unzip all the files to a temp folder and manually copy the folders over or as the instructions sayQuote-Installing the models is easy. Each download contains the correct folder structure for the models to work.If you extract each download straight into your 'Flight Simulator 9' folder, it will work-Quote-They must work, I did exactly as above and am flying the aircraft as we speak.CheersTimhttp://members.chello.nl/t.westnutt/realair1.gif
May 3, 200521 yr Just a note to be sure I'm not misuderstood...as often happens with the printed word. I am not being the least bit critical of Mr. Maltby, his instructions, or his very likely brilliant, time-consuming and GENEROUS work on the Trident.Regards,Jim
May 4, 200521 yr You were correct Tim. After deleting the results of my prior attempts, all was well.Superb machine. One of the finest add-ons available. LOVE the retro panels. Thanks for your guidance.Regards,Jim
