Repaints v Liveries. The difference?

Featured Replies

Morning all. Monday morning at work - seemed a good time for a boring question....Just wondering as to the difference between a "livery" and a "repaint"?I downloaded as an experiment a repaint from a New Zealand site, and ended up with a nice looking Air NZ plane, and a QANTAS plane.Size. Approx 1.3mbAnd I've downloaded very nice liveries from PMDG.Size. Approx 4.4mbGiven I got two repaints for 1.3mb, why are PMDG's 3mb larger? The only reason I ask this is I'm on a dial-up connection, so a minor issue like 3mb takes on some meaning....CheersTim

No difference between a livery and a repaint or a skin for that matter. Just the various names used by repainters. The difference in size is due to several things: the number of texture files required by the model, their size and the model complexity1....Some planes are designed very simply requiring only a very few bmp's to cover the plane. OTOH, PMDG(like many of the very detailed planedesigners) typically are very complex and require many bmp's to completely cover the model.2....The graphic quality of the bmp will have a significant impact on its size -- this applies to any bmp. 16 bit (commonly called DXT3) typically are 1024 x 1024 x 16 and are about 1.045mb in size. Whereas the same bmp saved as a 1024 x 1024 x 32 will require 4.097mb or four times as large. Multiply this by a large number of BMPs in a repaint and you can easily wind up with a single texture/livery over 50mb in size. 3...The inclusion of mipmaps will also increase the size of a bmp but not significantly. These are not really needed except for certain graphic cards -- some(graphic cards) love them whlie others hate them. 4....One other thing that really impacts the size are the dimensions of the bmp it self. I mentioned earlier most of today's bmps are 1024 x 1024 x n. Older planes and many of the newer AI only planes are designed using 512 x 512 x n. This means they are only 1/4th the size of their larger cousins. Ergo, less size which translates to less impact on FPS. Did ya ever notice the difference on FPS for a default 737 and a PMDG 737?Sorry for the rambling answer but I hope its makes some sense,-------------------Racartronit means something, but I just can't remember whatifdgsupport.jpg

It makes lots of sense. Thanks for your time with that -- appreciated.Tim
