May 19, 200521 yr 1. A few weeks ago, I mentioned the great work that Don Fiveash is doing at Santa Monica (KSMO). Since then other areas have started staffing class-D airports for GA use on VATSIM. In Virginia, Roanoke Municipal (KROA) is now being staffed, though on what basis I don't know. Oakland center has now committed to making Tuesday nights "GA Night," so now there's staffing for maybe half a dozen airports in the San Francisco Bay Area. At one point there were four or five class-Ds listed on Servinfo. By the time I got on, there was some server trouble and most of these had blinked out. In spite of that, I was able to get some quality time flying around Santa Clara (KRHV) and then Palo Alto (KPAO), just south of the Dumbarton Bridge. 2. Starting on Sunday, May 22 at 1200 PST (1900Z) and ending at 1600 PST (2300Z), Los Angeles center is hosting something called "D-Day." Description follows. For pilots new to this region (or to VFR on VATSIM), there's also a tutorial specially made for this event here: http://www.laartcc.org/events/new/pilotinfo.php?event=4 D-Day at KZLA -------------- This is not a WWII recreation, but a 'Class D' extravaganza! The following 'Class D' fields will be open... Carlsbad-Palomar (KCRQ), El Monte (KEMT), Gillespie (KSEE), Long Beach (KLGB), Oxnard (KOXR), Riverside Municipal (KRAL), Santa Monica (KSMO) Torrance (KTOA), Van Nuys (KVNY). The following Class B/C fields will also be open and served by approach controllers: Burbank (KBUR), Ontario (KONT), John Wayne-Orange County (KSNA), San Diego International (KSAN). Los Angeles International will also be staffed, however General Aviation VFR flight in/out of LAX is not recommended. You can experience what it
May 19, 200521 yr That is quite encouraging to hear. My only suggestion would be to add Palm Springs airport(KPSP) using Shehryar Ansari 'Shez' superb addon scenery. For Nothern California I would add South Lake Tahoe aiport (KTVL) mearly for it's beautiful mountain/lake surroundings. But I am sure every one has their favorits.
May 19, 200521 yr I'd be the guy thats staffing ROA on occasion. I'd really like to do it more often, but we're stretched for staffing at the DC3 (BWI, DCA, IAD) so I'm finding myself there more often than not. I open up RIC on occasion and have had a good showing. Problem with it is that we don't have any sector files for those Class C and D airports, so it makes it hard to issue taxi instructions if you don't know where they are on the airport.Unfortunately, I'm working on my CFI rating right now along with taking 2 classes so that I can graduate (non-radar ATC class and CRJ simulator, in other words, VERY busy), so I'm not going to be on very often in the coming months. On a positive note, we'd love to have you at BWI (my primary airport). We've even got runway 15L/33R dedicated specifically to GA, since it's right there at the GA parking ramp. I love having guys either depart to or arrive from FDK, MTN, ACY, etc. I've had some real world instrument students come in and practice holds and non-precision approaches. I'd be more than happy to have a scope full of that kind of stuff.
