White box in taskbar interrupts FS

Featured Replies

Hi,When I am flying in Flightsim everything seems ok, then the flightsim collapses down into the taskbar and stops. I have noticed that when this happens a small white box appears on the taskbar for about 2 seconds then disappears. This happens every 15 minutes. I have turned off all of the "update" programs I can find, and have stopped all the scheduled tasks. I have noticed this box appearing and disappearing while running other programs, but it doesn't completely stop them like it does with FS.I am running FS 2004, XP Professional w/ Norton Antivirus (which I turn off while running FS, and Norton Firewall.Hope someone can tell me what is happening, and how to stop this, it is very frustrating.Thankyou.

I would suggest scanning with another anti-virus software and spyware software (personally, I use avast free edition and microsoft antispyware beta). You might want to look at services and shutdown unnecessary ones (I use FSAutoStart myself).

Have also searched through my hard drive with Norton Antivirus, found nothing. Why should I try another anti-virus program....do you think Norton couldn't find it? It is a real puzzle, so far it's not spyware, not a virus, but has priority enough with Windows that when it starts it shuts down FS.

You could try running Task Manager in the background, showing the Processes list. Then when FS9 minimises, you might be quick enough to spot the name of the process. If you know the name of the process, a search of the registry might turn up more information on why it's running.

Please do not make the mistake of assuming that because you have one anti spyware program that you are safe, to my knowledge not one of them is 100 percent at catching everything. If I were you I would download one of the free ones that are available such as Spybot Search and Destroy or Adaware to double check your program. Next as far as Kens reccommendation on Norton, Norton is not a program that I would put all of my trust in either. People call me to fix their computers when they have a virus or other problem and I have found that Norton allows more viruses through than some of the freeware alternatives, such as Avast. With Norton you could be infected and never know about it. Also Norton consumes a huge amount of system resources when it really does not need to. I agree with Ken, get rid of Norton and get Avast anti virus, you'll be glad that you did. If this is not a step you are willing to take at least use some of the free online anti virus scanners available to you on the internet. Use one of them every few weeks or so to double check Norton, while you may never actually "need" them it is far better and safer to make sure you are safe. Here is a link to a good free online scan http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ I don't like to say negative things about a product such as Norton but too many people have complete faith in this program and it is a misplaced faith. It is a good program, it's just that it currently is not the top of the line protection against viruses. No anti virus program is always 100 percent safe that is why I reccomend that everyone use online scans every once in a while, but currently Norton lets through more than it should. Just FYI, you can run more than one spyware program on your computer at one time but not anti virus programs, do not try to run Norton and, say, Avast at the same time. You can run a free online scan though with any of the other programs installed. Best of luck,Philip Olsonhttp://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/supporter.jpg

I had Norton. I finally changed virus scanners. The new one detected a virus that Norton had ignored for two years. It was a trojan dropper than opened the backdoor for other virus'. I alway wondered why my system got attacked every month. Norton alway prevented it by deleting a necessary windows file. I was constantly having to put healthy files back in the System 32 folder. Guess Norton wanted me to believe it was actually doing something. When in fact, it was inviting in trouble and then making me believe it was a good thing to have. Norton is also a very resource intensive hog. I installed CHSSS, it found that backdoor trojan immediately, and now I have a system that doesn't get attacked and everything runs much better. You now know what I think of Norton!!

Hi GA1flyboy! I am having the exact same thing happening on my system.I am not so convinced it is a virus though.Do you happen to have a new Hewlet-Packard printer? My problems started after christmas when I installed a new HP2350 printer/copier/scanner.I noticed the problem started after installing the printer. When I uninstall the printer drivers, the problem stops. When i reinstall the printer drivers, the same problem starts again. It must be some thing in the drivers.I have been living with the problem since christmas but have not been able to figure out exactly which file is causing the problem. It really is a great printer,I am very happy with it so don't want to uninstall it.I am still trying to figure out the problem.this happens also when Flightsim is not running. It just pops up every 5-10 minutes no matter what I am doing.Anyone else have this problem?Maybe somebody else can help us?
