Long, strange AI journey

Featured Replies

OK, I've been a loyal Ultimate Traffic user since it came out for FS2002 and it has worked well with FS9. My only complaint has been the lack of GA traffic (other than the default), but I learned to live with it (or without, as the case may be). Recently I bought the MyTraffic military AI package. Very cool! Except that even on my high end system the amount of military traffic overwhelmed commercial traffic and affected frames in certain areas of the country. Still, I enjoyed it for a few weeks but eventually uninstalled it. Then I saw a review for FS Live Traffic, which I had dismissed as a novelty item when it came out. The review was pretty good so I bought it (yeah, I know, they offer a demo version). It requires a monthly subscription and you need to run it everytime you start FS. I have a home cockpit that makes shutting down the sim kind of a big deal but my biggest problem with the package is just how quiet the skies are, apparently. Now, it only captures flights with filed flight plans that aren't blocked and about half of the remainder fall through the cracks, so I tend to end up with maybe 8000 flights in the US (depends a bit on the time of day). THe major airports look very busy but small airports are deserted, and apparently GA traffic just isn't filing flight plans anymore (wish my instructor had given me that option!). Soooo, in hopes of getting more GA traffic, I purchased MyTraffic 2004, which somehow integrates with Live FS Traffic. Well, there does seem to be more GA traffic (maybe) but the small airport I tend to use in FS0 (KITH - where I earned my real PPL) has suddenly become an international airport! There are jets there from all over the world!! Many I've never heard of. Interesting because Ithaca is actually served only by USAir (B1900, DHC8, and CRJ).So what is my point to all this? Well, despite a lot of work, the need for the perfect AI package has not been met, IMO (there's a name for the product - Perfect AI!). Ultimate Traffic is by far the leader IMO but we desperately need a UT GA Edition. I know there was a freeware version that converted your own airplanes but that did not work well in my experience (CPU intensive and some planes didn't convert well). Does anyone know if anything is in the works? ThanksDavid

David, give GA-Traffic another try. The key, I think, is to use planes that are frame-friendly and built for AI. Here's a place to start -- http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...topic_id=200515 -- and since then there have been a number of additional packages made for just this purpose by Klaus Brosemann, Mike Cronin, and Henry Tomkiewicz. A keyword search for them in the AVSIM file library will turn up many planes and repaints thereof with which to populate your GA universe.

One more thing about GA-Traffic: when you said "cpu intensive" I assume you were referring to what complex models can do to framerates. But GA-Traffic does take a few minutes to do its thing once you set it going. However, once it's done it's done until you change something.

David,Thanks for the quick reply! I think GA-Traffic is a very cool addon, especially as freeware(!) but I just don't want to take the time to download a bunch of planes to convert. At some point, I am sure some enterprising person will package the whole thing together, hopefully for a reasonable price. GA-Traffic and FS Live Traffic both have the ability to generate accurate GA traffic routes and MyTraffic looks to have a number of decent AI-friendly GA models. It just seems like a nobrainer to me!David

David,Here's the place to get all the models:http://81.208.92.5/dee_cp/fs_projects/index.htmlJust put what you want in FS, select them in GA-Traffic, compile and you're done. I use Ultimate Traffic for Commercial and GA-Traffic for, well, GA, and couldn't be happier. The best part is you can scale your GA percentage without affecting the commercial side. Just be sure and use only true AI aircraft, or as you know your frame rates will definitely suffer.Todd
