Flight Sim is "pausing" for up to 12 seconds - help

Hey folks,I have a problem with FS9 pausing, for a lack of better terms, sometimes for up to 12 seconds and then when it comes out of it's "stuck" moment everything will be grey for a moment and the graphics will reload. This sometimes happens once or twice per minute, making it unflyable. I have everything unecessary turned off in the background, basically everything but FS9. I am running AI traffic, but I can't imagine it is having this kind of impact, in fact it doesn't matter where I am at (regarding ai density). I could be at a municipal airport with no GA aircraft, it doesn't matter.
