June 17, 200520 yr In fs9 when I want to descent from cruise altitude and I change the vertical speed to a negative value the attitude indicator shows that the plane is pitched below the horizon, nose down. Is there a way to descent with a pitch attitude of zero degrees? I did a search on AVSIM and fs9 learning center and I have trouble finding an answer. What is the proper way to descent a jet.
June 17, 200520 yr The only way I know of would be to bring your airspeed down so low with the nose up that you have gone into a pre-stall condition like you would on FINAL descent.
June 17, 200520 yr I know much depends on the jet's angle of incidence at cruise. Many pax jets cruise with the nose pitched up 2-3 degrees. Ideally, I try to start my descent at about a 3 to 1 ratio--meaning I allow 3 miles distance from my destination for every one thousand feet of altitude AGL when planning my descent. At FL350, I usually start my descent at 105 miles out assuming I'm aiming for an airport at or around sea level. I reduce thrust and adjust pitch so I maintain this level of descent--usually it nets out to around 2000fpm at 280-300 KIAS initially. Whether my nose is level with the horizon or slightly below depends on the aircraft model.I know when I fly in real life, some pilots descend at a marked downward pitch even in the flight levels. I somewhat recall this less true in an aircraft like the 747 vs. an aircraft like a 733 or A320. The smaller the jet it seems the more I notice the downward pitch. But I am not in the cockpit so some of that may be the sensation of transitioning from a positive pitch to a neutral pitch. Almost always they reduce thrust to idle or nearly so during the initial descent.-John
June 17, 200520 yr Curious question. First I have to ask why?Secondly, as has been said bring the speed back to that level pitch=required descent rate. Add flap to lower pitch for a given speed (if below limiting speed).
