help with checkerboard forests please

I recently downloaded freeware textures that promised a variety of sights over wilderness expanses (can't remember where). Now treed areas appear like a checkerboard of different forest textures. I would like to get rid of this effect.Any suggestions? Would it hurt to remove forest textures I don't like?
