Jagged texture edges in horizon..

Featured Replies

Sometimes I get a big sawtooth pattern off in the horizon in ground textures, and sometimes I don't. It's more evident at altitude (25k+). Is there an adjustment somewhere that can change this? Thanks,Mark

Without a screenshot, I have to assume you are talking about one of two things, so I'll tackle them both.MSFS renders the ground using bitmap textures out to 50,60 miles (assuming you have extended terrain textures checked in display settings). Beyond that, it uses, or I should say "draws" scenery in from a rather generic world map. These blend fairly well, but sometimes they don't and you can get a sawtooth or checkerboard appearance towards the horizon. If you have add-on textures, they may make things worse since Microsoft designed this distant scenery around the default textures. There's two cures for this--lower vis to 50-60 miles, and you will rarely see the effect. Or, revert to default textures if you've loaded custom textures if you have to run with high vis. You need to know that sometimes reducing vis below 60 miles isn't enough. If your aircraft is above the vis upper limit, you'll still see unlimited vis at altitude, although the ground will be obscured by "haze" here and there. You can change the limit in weather settings in the vis tab.A second issue is with the way the default env bitmaps influence ground/horizon blending on certain dates. On some dates, the blending is very sharp and overdone, causing the mountains to look jagged and in sharp contrast with the horizon. Sometimes we can see this in the RW, but the effect is overdone with the default setup. I have a small download you can try, called "Soft Horizons", which improves this second issue. My hunch is you're suffering from the first issue I mention.Regards,John

Hey John-Thanks for the reply. My current setup is as follow:Ultimate TerrainFSGenesis MeshFScene Summer texturesActiveSky 2004I've set default visiblity to 50 miles in FSUIPC (graduated visibility). Is the "Soft Horizons" in the file library? I'll check it out.

"Soft Horizons" is in the library, but I already see you have add-on textures (FScene Summer Textures). They may be making the problem worse for the reasons I mentioned above. Soft Horizons will at least make the haze at higher visibilities a bit more realistic and help "blend" the add-on textures with the default distant terrain. But I don't think it will eliminate the problem entirely. One problem even with programs that tweak the vis is when you are above the vis layer, you'll see well beyond the 50 miles it's limited at. Next time you see the problem, go into weather settings directly and bump up the top of the vis layer to anything above your flight level, and see if that helps.-John
