Transferring FS folder to another computer?

Featured Replies

I just got another computer and found out my FS disc 4 is unreadable. What kind of problems can be created if I just move the entire folder over a network to my new computer? This would also allow me to keep the add-ons that I have lost the .exes for (PMDG in particular). Anyone tried this?

I'd suggest trying to find an FS2004 disk set used. Most likely place to look is Ebay. You can transfer the folders over just fine. In fact I used that method for some folders when setting up my new computer. Folders like Guages, Add On Scenery, Aircraft, Textures can all be ported over with no problem. Where you will run into a problem however is to try to move the whole sim over. Also many payware sceneries and airplanes won't work until you reinstall them.FS2004 and many payware products puts entries in your registry that you'd have to know and duplicate on the new computer. Without those the sim would be rather useless since it's highly integrated into Windows during the install process. You may try contacting Microsoft. I've heard that they might replace a disk if you can show proof of purchase. I've also heard the opposite too so you take your chances.Last time I saw a copy retail it was going for $26 U.S. so it's not prohibitively expensive if you do have to go that route but check with Microsoft and Ebay first.

I plan to upgrade the computer this fall. I also plan to install the flight sim and all the addons from scratch. I have found that taking shortcuts always causes me trouble. Also, despite my thick skull, I learn between installs, or my preferences change a bit, and, though it is a pain to do it, a fresh install always turns out better.Just a thought...
