February 4, 200620 yr do in rl, forget (LATE?) also. ;-)look at this track log for USA704 currently enroute from KCLT to KPBI. Picked it because of family.http://flightaware.com/live/flight/USA704/tracklogNotice how the reported altitude climbed steady to 30000 and then made a quick jump back to 25100 and then climbed steady back to 30000. Someone reset the barometer to standard conditions, just like I do, --- LATE.I noticed this on other logs as well.Do you think I am correct?Regards,BobShttp://s95171098.onlinehome.us/junk/aopa.jpg
February 4, 200620 yr They must have flown through a couple of hurricanes. Point one (.1) inches of mercury is 100 feet on the needles of an altimeter. The difference between FL300 and FL251 is a 4900 feet, thats 4.9 inches of mercury, which is a heck of alot if you think about the fact that a regular altimeter only covers from 28.00 to 31.00 inches.Standard is 29.92 inches. The pressure here in VA was about 29.85 all day long, so I'll assume it was in that general range down in NC. So if it was 29.85 on the ground at CLT, and he forgot to set it to 29.92 when passing FL180, thats still only a difference of .07, or 70 feet.So in short, no, I don't think it was an issue of forgetting to reset the altimeter. Probably a software glitch. If you read the forums on flightaware's site, its evident that there are some bugs in their system. A great site, yes!!!, but still in its infancy.
