New HJG KC-135R Problem....

Featured Replies

Hi folks...Can anyone else comment on an instability when levelling off with the new Historic Jetliners Group's (HJG) KC-135R model? I have downloaded two new ones from this site within the last week, and have been delighted with the visual aspects of the aircraft; she just 'looks' like a KC...! One that caught my eye was new in the library a couple of days ago and depicts a version from RAF Mildenhall...a USAF airbase a few miles from me and I see these beauties pass over my house every day, and taking off from both Mildenhall, and RAF Lakenheath on most days too.Anyway! The problem is that when levelling out into cruise, the aircraft doesn't seem able to do it! The nose is constantly rising and falling aprox 5-10 degrees; it's not often that one can feel airsick whilst sat on ones settee, but....!! A quick and dirty fix was to take and rename the AIR file from a different HJG KC-135 model (in my case, the KC-137C). This seems to have done the trick and I've not noticed any adverse effects anywhere else.If anyone else has experienced this problem, then this quick-fix of mine may help you too :)It's a shame that this has happened if it's a problem with the released model, as I've never had any problems like this from HJG before and have always had, and still have, the greatest respect for them and their work!

Is this problem with or without the autopilot ALT engaged? If engaged, is it worse at higher altitude?

Hi Charlie!Sorry, I should have mentioned...yes, it is with the autopilot, but it doesn't 'seem' any worse at higher altitude; I only tried at 4000 and FL310, and the effect appeared to be the same! The replacement AIR file from an earlier HJG KC model looks like it's fixed the error though..

OK, when I get time I'll download it to see what can be done with the airfile. I was thinking of getting it anyway.

Downloaded and installed. What panel are you using? The panel.cfg reads alias=FSFSCONVpanel.pg.707 and I don't have that installed.I have tried with George Carty's 707 panel and can't seem to get the autopilot to work properly but at least there was no adverse effect on flight. I also noticed the yaw damper is set to zero in the aircraft.cfg and I thought there should be a yaw damper on this plane. If so, the zero should be changed to a one. However, whichever it is probably won't make a difference to level flight.

Hi Charlie.I've also done that Yaw Damper change; I too have no idea as to whether the 135R's actualy have them, but I would have thought so too! I've also changed the Autopilot settings in the CFG to allow for Auto-Throttle arming:[autopilot]use_no_default_pitch=1autopilot_available=1flight_director_available=1default_vertical_speed=1800.000000autothrottle_available=1autothrottle_arming_required=1autothrottle_takeoff_ga=0autothrottle_max_rpm=90.000000pitch_takeoff_ga=8.000000default_pitch_mode=0Once again, I'm assuming that this aircraft has Autothrottle! As I previously mentioned, I copied and renamed the AIR file from the HJG KC-137C as a replacement for the 135R and that has completely stopped the nose up/down swinging, so I can only assume once more that there is something not quite right with the one as supplied! As for the panel; well, it was once the 707 panel from the HJG web site, but I've modified it beyond all recognition to much more closely that of a KC-135R. It uses a mix of default gauges and various freeware gauges from a range of other panels, and works just fine in other HJG 707/KC models, along with the Rey Lopez and Mike Stone 707/KC models!http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/145662.jpgCheers :)

That's a good looking set up you have there. I take it the second pic is the real thing? As I don't see any evidence of a VC with the model and all I see in VC view is the wings and engines.I'll have a look at the site later and see if I can get the panel.

Thanks Charlie :) Yes, the lower part of the piccie is a real one! Here's another shot using the same KC panel to compare with the 'original' panel that I downloaded from HJG a couple of years back....as i said, it's been changed beyond all recognition, but, this original panel made a good 'blueprint' to start re-painting and modifying!http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/145825.jpgThe top half shows the original....I have since this picture, made a few more small adjustments to align stuff better, but I'm still not too happy with the MCU/Glareshield..if I can find a suitable source photo, I'm going to replace it with a more accurately scaled image.Cheers...

Now I've seen how much you have changed it I'm not sure whether to bother with the original panel. You must have spent a very long time working on it.I think what I'll do for now is compare the aircraft.cfg files from this plane and George Carty's 707 and try to make suitable changes if necessary and then see what happens. His panel works very well with the 707-420 he coupled it with.
